‘Maestra’ review: Looking at the world’s only all-female competition for conductors

The triumphs stand out most.

Maestra is a documentary that recently screened at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film follows five women from around the world as the compete in the only all-women competition for conductors. The film explores the various factors that shaped the group into who they are and the obstacles they continue to face.

La Maestra was founded to help female conductors get noticed in the male dominated profession. Filmmaker Maggie Contreras allows time to get to know each of the participants and what they are dealing with. One of the women worries about how having children may negatively impact her future while another tries to prepare while taking care of her kids.

Maestra deals with a number of heavy themes. Along with questions about family, the doc deals with sexism and abuse. As dark as things get, it never loses the audience. For all the tragedy, it is the triumphs that leave the strongest impression. It is a powerful watch that manages to be ultra-focused while addressing a bigger issue.
