Captain Marvel: Dark Tempest #1 is a different take on Carol

Dark Tempest feels like it’s telling us how cool Carol us rather than show us.

Captain Marvel’s had a great 2023 already; Kelly Thompson’s incredible 50-issue run just completed, she’s headlining Avengers right now, the MCU is set to release her sequel film, and legendary talent Ann Nocenti was coming on for a mini. Dark Tempest was a promising pitch: Nocenti’s writing with Paolo Villanelli’s pencils for a fun adventure in between books. Issue #1 does leave some things to be desired, however.

Captain Marvel is cool — anyone who’s ever read her books could tell you that. But Dark Tempest tries to convey that in a way that seems like it’s telling us more than it’s showing us. The villains are perhaps the best example of this, rounding them out to be perhaps among the most perplexing Captain Marvel villains I’ve ever encountered.

I still can’t discern what I felt when I read Carol tell Jessica Drew “apparently these kids hate breeders so you better wait outside” but I definitely felt something confounding. The dialogue just doesn’t feel convincing or organic a lot of the time and it really takes me out of the story. Carol going back to Maine is easily the best part because conceptually, seeing heroes in really down to Earth settings is always fun.

I don’t want to cast too much judgment on issue #1 so perhaps issue #2 and the rest of the series will be more gripping.
