Mark had hoped that moving back to his childhood home on Turner Island would give him a fresh start after his divorce. However, in Brynmore #3, we learn that some secrets are better left buried. Despite facing hostility from the locals, Mark is determined to make his new life work. That is until he discovers a giant stone in the shape of a coffin in the basement of the church he is renovating for himself. Family secrets come to life in Brynmore #3.
Steve Niles takes us back to the mid-1700s and reveals the island’s dark history. Mark discovers the creature he freed from the basement coffin has hidden depths, leaving us as the reader unsure whether the red-eyed giant is friend or foe. I really love this series and I think issue #3 sheds a lot of light on why the folks on Turner Island aren’t too happy about Mark, a “Turner,” coming back to town. The stakes are raised in this issue. At first, it seems like Mark isn’t taking the consequences of awakening the creature seriously. However, as the story comes to a close, you begin to see what happens and realize more than ever that he’s going to take raising the dead and the curses it brings upon the island seriously.
The art by Damien Worm in this book reminded me of the iconic “raise the dead” scene from Michael Jackson’s Thriller music video. The zombies depicted in the book look terrifying and viciously awesome, and as soon as they appear on the beaches of Turner Island, you know they mean business. I really liked the color effects in the artwork, which paid homage to some great horror movies such as Creepshow and Jaws. I’m not sure if that was the intention, but that’s how I saw it and regardless, I loved it.
Brynmore is gradually becoming one of my favorite horror comic series of 2023. The pacing is good, and Mark is a character readers can root for – who wouldn’t want to see someone rebuilding their life after a divorce and fighting against killer zombies? I’m looking forward to seeing how everything comes together in issue #4.
