‘Freestyle 101: Hip Hop History’ review: Entertaining look at an important piece of music history

Off the dome.

Freestyle 101: Hip Hop History looks at what is arguably the most under appreciated and simultaneously overexposed part of hip hop. Narrated by the legendary Chuck D of Public Enemy, the documentary examines the evolution of freestyling. Filled with iconic MCs and a great flow, the film is a multifaceted exploration.

All it takes is a quick search on YouTube to see how watered down freestyling has become. Videos of high school kids making nonsensical rhymes with cuss words, comical rap battles, and even Darth Vader can be found. Social media has turned it into something that looks easy and seems to lack any skill.

The irony of Freestyle 101 is how it demonstrates the ease that can be found in the art. As P.E.A.C.E. one of the interviewees says, if you have something to say, you can freestyle. Of course, he does not mean it is as simple as that, but the point is clear. As long as you have something on your mind, you can learn to freestyle.

The film does not discount the talent and work that rhyming off the dome requires, however. In particular, Freestyle 101 follows two men who book their own tours and produce their own music. Mixed with interviews and footage, it is an excellent showcase of the dedication and drive needed.

Though there is some discussion about the history of hip hop and how it has changed, this is not a comprehensive look at the music. As interesting as that it would be, the more focused approach makes for an interesting watch. The roots of hip hop and how it has progressed is an interesting story, and Freestyle 101: Hip Hop History chronicles an important piece of it. This is a must watch for music fans.

Freestyle 101: Hip Hop History comes to digital platforms October 24
