Anatomy of a Scene: Life is Strange: Forget-Me-Not #1

Get an inside look at the artistic process in ‘Life is Strange: Forget-Me-Not’ #1, out on December 13th.

Courtesy of Titan Comics, AIPT can exclusively share the anatomy of a scene, courtesy of Life is Strange: Forget-Me-Not #1 artists Claudia Leonardi and Andrea Izzo. The series launches December 13th wherever comics are sold, featuring a story written by Zoe Thorogood.

Taking place after the events of Life is Strange: True Colors, Alex & Steph tour across the states. They find another lost soul on the road named Lily and they take the teenager under their wing to uncover the truth of what shes’ running from.

Claudia Leonardi:
This page is the first time in the comic we see the inside of the school bus the girls repurposed as a mobile home. So, I knew I had to start this page with a large panel where we can see some of the interior of the bus, where the next pages take place, and start to show some decorations Alex and Steph brought with them from Haven Springs.

One other important part of this page is the kiss. I kept it borderless and overlapping the rest of the panels because it interrupts not just the conversation Alex and Steph are having, but the framing of the page. It breaks the rhythm of reading for just a moment, creating a sort of bubble where the time the girls are experiencing is slightly expanded.

Andrea Izzo:
I started with the flat colors, using the character colors and the ones I chose for the interior of the bus

Here I started adding the shadows and light sources, trying to highlight the most important elements on each panel.

Lastly I added other lights, shadows and effects, like the ones from the fairy lights, to give the page the right mood. In this case I created a contrast between the cold colors in the foreground, to underline Alex’s feelings, and the warmer colors in the background, because the bus represent the idea of “home” for Alex and Steph.
