Emanuelle’s Revenge is proof that there is no franchise that is too infamous to be revisited. The original series from France introduced the character to the world, and though they are not connected, the latest movies seems more closely related to the Italian series starring Laura Gemser. Leonardo (Gianni Rosato) is a rich playboy who meets and becomes obsessed with Emanuelle (Beatrice Schiaffino). He soon learns the past is not easily ignored.
Things move quickly early on. A number of characters are introduced as the story zips from Milan to Budapest. The editing is very choppy and the rapid fire pace makes it impossible to keep up with anything or learn much about anybody. The locations are lavish and everyone is attractive, but the eroticism the name promises is nowhere to be found.
Thankfully, Emanuelle’s Revenge finds itself after its extended cold open. The pace slows down greatly and the film takes more time to get to know its characters. The fancy locales are pushed to the background and are no longer the focus. Things are still a little too threadbare, but there are hints of the allure that some will expect.
This is most evident in the title character. While the racier scenes are what grabbed attention, the movies would be nothing more than just nameless late night filler if not for Emanuelle. Emanuelle’s Revenge continues the trend of giving audiences a character that is mysterious and enticing. Schiaffino commands scenes from her first appearance. This goes beyond mere sex appeal as it is her personality and presence that stand out.
Surprisingly, plot takes precedence over titillation. Emanuelle’s Revenge has its share of sexy moments, but the mystery is more important. From vague comments to a jarring time jump, it is clear something has happened. This is where Schiaffino is at her best, using slight glances to entice questions. (The sudden appearance of Leonardo’s grown daughter may be the biggest mystery of all, however.)
It is in the final act when everything comes together. Though it sometimes feels rushed, Emanuelle’s vengeance is brutal and uncomfortable. Still, there is a sense that Emanuelle’s Revenge stops short of fully delivering. It is a satisfying watch that often feels like a tease.
