‘T-Blockers’ review: Wild and fun Australian horror movie

Wild Australian splatterpunk.

T-Blockers takes a familiar horror/sci-fi premise and pulls it into the modern world. An earthquake in a small town unleashes parasites that thrive on hatred. It is up to Sophie (Lauren Last, Wyrmwood: Apocalypse) and her friends to save the people who have made her life a living hell.

Director Alice Maio Mackay infuses her movie with a vibrant energy that never slows down during. the entire movie. Only eighteen years old, Mackay already has three movies on her resume. In other words, the young filmmaker works fast. This manic work ethic imbues T-Blockers.

When films move at such a hectic pace, there are a number of risks. It can be a lack of character development, the story may end up being lost, or it just may all be simply too much for the audience. That is never a problem in T-Blockers. Everything comes in hectic spurts, but it never feels like there is too much to take in. Characters definitely take a back seat, but the ultra-stylish horror does a great job of telling its story.

There is little subtlety when it comes to T-Blockers. It is very much a case of what you see is what you get. And this movie has no problems getting right up in your face. But through all the gunk and gore, there is also a lot of heart. Its story of toxic masculinity and finding oneself in a world filled with hate is chaotic fun.

T-Blockers is out now on VOD and Digital
