‘Green Lantern’ #11 review

The Resistance Corps forces the United Planets to show their hand, but at what cost?

The action continues as Jeremy Adams and Xermanico charge up their rings for another thrilling issue of Green Lantern. This time, they add Amancay Nahuelpan to their Corps for the main portion, and Kevin Maguire returns for the bonus “bogus” adventure. The nefarious plot of the United Planets continues to sweep the universe, as you can see in our preview of the issue. Not only does the destruction of Central Power Batteries continue, but Carol drops the “M” word with her new boyfriend. How will Hal Jordan and the Resistance Corps overcome the control of the United Planets?

The destruction of the Central Power Battery on Zamaron adds another casualty from the Emotional Spectrum, which makes this mystery interesting. How will the Emotional Spectrum and other color corps be after this damage? I appreciate that Jeremy Adams added that element to his story, as I enjoyed seeing the different Corps. Hopefully, we will also get some of their famous ring bearers appearing soon. That hope might progress as Carol Ferris gets a big spotlight with this issue.

The issue occurs in three different ways, spanning two eras and locations. We see Carol drop the idea of marriage with her current boyfriend, Nathan Broome, which helps the story move to Las Vegas for a quickie marriage. I get a chuckle from Carol’s choice of men as they have names related to her and Hal Jordan’s creators, John Broome and Gil Kane. Gil Johns was Carol’s husband when Hal was the Spectre, and you can most likely see where Gil and Nathan’s names come to honor those creators.

The trip to Vegas brings a flashback to Carol’s mind of a young, reckless Hal stealing a car to take them to Vegas, adding another vehicle theft to Hal’s crimes. The flashback is an excellent device for Adams and Nahuelpan to show Carol’s struggle with Hal. Ultimately, it seems that Carol will stick by Hal, but I do like that the flashback isn’t necessarily in Hal’s favor. While it may seem that Hal is not the most dependable guy, he always goes to Carol, and she does stand by his side. I can’t wait to see what Carol will do next, especially considering that last-page cliffhanger.

While Carol and Nathan’s road trip happens, the Resistance Corps takes the fight and truth straight to the United Planets. The confrontation is where the main action is, and I could see the twist coming, but it still hits hard for the Corps when it happens. I can’t wait to see how the Resistance Corps will deal with this setback. Before the main portion ends, we see another corps ring searching for its ring bearer, and I can’t wait to see her in action. The “bogus” story with Guy Gardner and a Lobo clone is excellent humor that takes the edge off of the previous thriller. Maguire kills with his facial expressions, and Adams cleans up with his humorous dialogue to give a fantastic finish to the issue.

Personal and planetary struggles happen as Jeremy Adams, Xermanico, Amancay Nahuelpan, and Kevin Maguire give us Lantern drama. The Resistance Corps plays their big card against the United Planets, but was the gambit worth it? Carol is torn between her heart and mind, while Guy Gardner deals with vengeful yet dense bounties as he protects Lobo. The drama and laughs rise as the Emotional Spectrum mystery deepens, making this a great installment of Green Lantern.

Xermanico and Nahuelpan play perfectly off each other to showcase Carol's struggle with Hal while colorist Romulo Fajardo Jr. keeps the vibe continuous in both eras
Adams makes the struggles interesting as we see Hal wanting to go head first against the United Planets, Carol facing her mind and heart, and Guy dealing with a different kind of Lobo
The United Planets just don't care and are marching across the universe taking what they want, which is a scary villain as they've absorbed or destroyed their opposition
Maguire is great to see working with Guy and Lobo, especially with his layouts that play the humor perfectly in their given situation
