‘Reginald the Vampire’ season 2 episode 5 review: Recycled storylines minimize their impact

Reginald the vampire looks for powerful allies to defeat Bolestro.

The previous episode of Reginald the Vampire was a downer with Claire experiencing a death in her family. The gang came together for their youngest member in her time of need. An unexpected result was the formulation of a plan to defeat the angel, Bolestro.

In “Undead Bedfellows,” Reginald and company hope to assemble a team of skilled vampires to help combat Bolestro including the magic wielding Justine. Kaylah Zander loves chewing the scenery with her portrayal to the point Justine almost becomes a caricature. It’s a shame, because when we first meet her, she comes off as someone with some principles regardless of her methods. The partnership reinforces the fine line our heroes must walk to ensure the future of vampires.

One of the main complaints about this episode of Reginald the Vampire is the recycling of storylines. There is more relationship drama between Sarah and Reginald, but their dynamic doesn’t have the same charm it once had. The bigger offense is returning to the murder mystery of a vampire serial killer considering this was used only a few episodes prior. The big reveal is predictable and lacks real impact.

As a whole, the series has lost its fun vibes and humor that made it so enjoyable. We’re fresh off of the bittersweet funeral episode and “Undead Bedfellows” lacks the pick me up to lift your spirits. Instead, many of the characters come off as jerks. Right when you think the “cool kids” are ready to embrace Uriel, especially for what he did for Claire, the angel is manipulated and lead on until he is no longer useful. His mistreatment has the potential to spark a supervillain origins story. Here’s hoping for a quick return of Nikki and Ashley because they seem to be the only likable people right now.

There are some interesting developments to keep you hopeful moving forward. With all this talk of a team of powerful vampires, it’s surprising Reginald forgot the one he met late last season. It should be cool to catch up with what he’s doing, and he does seem like a formidable threat to Bolestro. Something that could go under the radar is that it seems Reginald obtains another ability that can be useful in the eventual final battle. He’s not quite skilled with it yet, but he is a quick learner.

This week’s Reginald the Vampire is disappointing with rehashed storylines and lacking the fun and charm that made the show enjoyable.
