On the last episode of Reginald the Vampire, the gang strike out in recruiting the time bending Abraham to their cause against the angel, Bolestro. However, they don’t leave completely empty handed since they are given the cryptic clue that their friend, Claire, is the key to the upcoming war.
“Terminal Eternity” is the quiet before the storm episode where everyone prepares to say their good byes knowing that the vampires may all soon die. It demonstrates the real stakes at hand and ratchets up the emotional weight of the situation. But it seems long, drawn out, and overly melodramatic. Even highlighting the usually enthralling Ashley and Nikki relationship loses some luster with the dread of a permanent good-bye. The only real positive is seeing the magical spark between Reginald and Sarah as the pair have sweet pseudo-camping date. Reginald shows off his good boyfriend credentials with the creativity and sincereness in his planning. It’s all very cute.
Speaking of Ashley and Nikki, their newest addition is having issues with her new living situation. You can understand Claire’s point of view of being a burden to her guardians. Except, where she ends up is pretty maddening considering the strained relationship. She wouldn’t have ended up with Nikki and Ashley if that person took responsibility in the first place. Then, through handwaving, Claire is on good enough terms to live with them. It’s a plot hole difficult to digest.
The action of Reginald the Vampire doesn’t pick up until the end with Uriel going full unhinged supervillain. Max Montesi can make his character feel terrifying as he adds another victim on his belt. It’s even more shocking “death” than last week, but the next scene lessens the impact. As much as Uriel and Reginald’s confrontation provides the only real excitement, it doesn’t compensate for much of the slower paced moments that precede it. The episode is another example of the series inconsistent balance this season.
Right when you think Reginald the Vampire turned the corner last week, “Terminal Eternity” is plagued by slow pacing and questionable narrative decisions.
