‘Wolverine: Deep Cut’ #1 will please Claremont fans

Wolverine versus Sabretooth, who ya got?!

Chris Claremont returns with a new Wolverine miniseries today, and in it, we get Storm, Sabretooth, and a tease for a major villain encounter. Packing a bunch of characters into Wolverine: Deep Cut isn’t the only delight it offers, but Edgar Salazar will blow you away with a Sabretooth versus Wolverine showdown.

For fans of Claremont, there’s plenty here to enjoy. From his use of Kate Pryde to the internal monologue of Wolverine, there are plenty of old-school X-Men here. Probably the biggest win for X-Men fans is how badass Storm is, as she proves she can outfight Wolverine easily. If you’re an old school fan, you’ll be happy.

If you like action, Salazar crushes on the action scene. Most of the issue is focused on this fight scene, with cutaways to story-building moments. This fight scene is intense, with characters losing their eyes, getting gutted, and generally capturing the ferocity of these wild animal characters. The choreography is well done and exciting.

EXCLUSIVE Marvel First Look: Wolverine: Deep Cut #1

That fight scene naturally builds towards a reveal that doesn’t feel out of nowhere or unearned. That’s thanks to the results of the fight and Wolverine’s heightened senses in this battle.

If you’re looking for a meaty, long read, you’ve come to the wrong place. This is really a fight scene with a touch of plot development on the side. Is the fight scene awesome? Yeah, but it’s also a fight scene we’ve seen many times before.

Wolverine: Deep Cut #1 offers an awesome Wolverine vs. Sabretooth fight scene as the story slowly builds towards a direction. Is it something we’ve seen many times before? Sure, but Salazar knocks it out of the park.
