‘Destro’ #3 takes surprising twists and turns

Destro vs. Chameleon, who ya got?!

Destro has been a series entwined in the military-industrial complex and the legacy of weapons builders. So far, though, Destro isn’t alone in making weapons to kill, and the twins Xamot and Tomax seem to have sent an assassin to make their capitalist goals soar. But as we all know, you never want to underestimate a supervillain.

Destro #3 opens where we left off, with an assassin pointing their gun at Destro. He’s just left his highly classified and remote ancestral tomb, and he’s pretty ticked off that anyone else besides himself knows where it is. He’s also not afraid in the slightest. Soon, he’s pointing super-high-tech weaponry at the assassin, and…nothing. Sabotage!

So begins a breakneck issue of Destro narrowly dodging death, and the plot thickens as to what he must do next. That includes a quick scene at a M.A.R.S. facility and a cliffhanger that should get G.I. Joe fans excited.

With all the action going on, it’s somewhat surprising to get a robust backstory on the Destro family. About 16 pages into the issue, the story cuts to 1639. The connections between Destro and capitalism are highlighted through his ancestor, but also the lack of empathy for anyone killed by the weapons his family creates. It’s a good way of showing Destro isn’t just one man, but an ancestry of killing.

Writer Dan Watters draws out Destro’s fearless and rather egomaniacal personality while he fights Chameleon. This is a man unaccustomed to losing.

Andrea Milana’s art conveys a lot of Destro’s attitude and his ability to fight in the field. Between the lengthy fight sequence and the final few pages, Milana proves Destro is a strategist who plays long and short games.

The pace of this issue is good, but the flashback slapped into the narrative feels awkward. It’s much needed- Destro hasn’t had a lot of backstory yet- but with so much dedication to the action scene, it seems out of place. The issue moves at such a good clip that you may not even notice.

The cliffhanger is quite intriguing, given how much of this story ties into the military-industrial complex globally. This issue shows the man’s mettle, but can his evil be used for good? It’s a twist you won’t see coming.

Destro #3 shows new sides of Destro as he fights in the field and shows off his master strategist mindset. This is a suspenseful issue that continues to tug at the evils of the military industrial complex.
