Courtesy of Comixology, AIPT can share a unique look at Helen Mullane and Tula Lotay’s series Groupies. Out on October 22nd, the series features five characters.
So what’s Groupies about?
On a wild night out at the Fox Club, the hottest girls on the Sunset Strip meet the cutest up-and-coming band in town, and sparks fly. As The Moon Show celebrates getting signed to legendary Asmodeus Records, they share a magical night, a night that nobody wants to end.
Comixology has many new projects on the way; make sure to check out our NYCC coverage for more on those.

AMINA
Gorgeous, glamorous, and charming, anyone who’s anyone knows Amina. The grandchild of a great beauty of Hollywood’s first Golden Age, as a kid, Amina was left to a life of ‘benign neglect’, and she spent most of her time prowling the seedy streets of Hollywood Boulevard with her similarly descended friends. In the early sixties, she was invited up to the 1700 block of North Crescent Heights Boulevard, the notorious party house where artists, actors, musicians, and beautiful people would meet and mingle for wild parties. Since then, she’s never looked back and has accumulated a truly iconic Rolodex of stars who know they should always call Amina when they arrive in L.A.
VERA VICIOUS
Vera would love you to think she’s a tough street urchin turned party girl, but the boring truth is she grew up in plush luxury loved by an attentive family in the Hollywood Hills. But Vera’s appetite for excitement was never going to be sated by following the cushy path laid out for her. Vera wants everything, and she wants it now. Hard-edged and spiky, this self-proclaimed queen of the groupies is full of intense, magnetic energy. Her verve often makes her the de facto leader of the group, when she’s not being messy or beefing with her friends over a guy. Vera’s dark make-up and bleached blond hair give her the feel of a proto-punk, which is perfectly appropriate because when it comes to music and fashion, she’s always ahead of the curve. She idolizes Amina, who she sees as the epitome of the kind of effortless cool that always seems to cost her more than she’d like to admit.
LISA STORM
The antithesis of her friend Vera, Lisa is sweet and soft-spoken. She’s a bit naive, although not without wile. She’s perfectly aware of how her sometimes performative innocence can affect the guys around her. Under the tutelage of Amina and Vera, Lisa’s been getting deeper into the party scene. She loves who she is when she’s with the girls. Unfortunately, she has trouble sticking to the most important groupie maxim: never fall in love, so heartbreak is her almost constant bedfellow. Lisa was introduced to the rock and roll life by Vera, with whom she shares a strangely competitive yet protective dynamic. Although it can be claws out on both sides when they’re after the same guy, Vera is protective of Lisa for her youth and naïveté. At the same time, Lisa can suddenly be fierce in the face of Vera’s smallest judgement, which her friend sometimes suffers even in their permissive world.
GAIA AND MORGAINE
Gaia and Morgaine come as a pair, inseparable best friends and superstitious witches. They share an earthy sexuality, chill demeanour and unwillingness to make any major decisions without a preparative Tarot reading. Unlike the rest of the group who were born out of the seedy underbelly of Hollywood, Gaia and Morgaine moved to Los Angeles from Philadelphia. The centre of rock and roll when they were kids, the city’s doo-wop now seems passe and the pair were determined to get to the centre of the action and live the hippy dream in the eternal sunshine of California.
Gaia is surrounded by signs and portents. She’s an expert Tarot reader and feels a deep, spiritual connection to the cards. She seeks beauty and values connection above all things. She’s confident and comfortable with the hypnotic dazzle she brings to the function. Her deepest connection is with Morgaine, and she sees their bond as something eternal that will remain long after this groupie’s game has lost its luster. Although the pair are of one mind on many issues, Gaia can’t help but be a little concerned by what she perceives as her friend’s spiraling drug use.
Morgaine is the most dedicated psychonaut of the crew. She loves nothing more than being totally out of her mind, tripping balls, and riding musical notes up to the stratosphere. But Morgaine is hiding a secret from the rest of the gang, especially from Gaia. While she and her friend have always come as a pair, a groupie two-for-one, Morgaine’s motivation is not as simple as finding a fun, sexy way to make sure that their rock and roll obsessions get obsessed right back.
MYUUZU
Myuuzu is outspoken and funny, delivering acerbic one-liners in sparkly hot pants. She’s an old friend of Amina’s but new to most of the girls. She talks tough, but she’s deeply empathetic to the journey of the other girls. She remembers what it’s like to be used and have your heart broken by these rock stars again and again. She’s been in the game a long time before settling down with her current beau, Ravana, crossing the line from groupie to girlfriend, and there’s nothing starry-eyed about her. Unlike the others, she doesn’t haunt the Sunset Strip and instead has been traveling Europe and the States with Ravana, whose guitar skills have been in demand in various bands before he met Si Savage. She and Ravana share a heroin habit they picked up in London that when we meet them is still in its honeymoon period and has yet to run too far out of control.
Myuuzu’s not afraid to speak on some of the uncomfortable dynamics, casual mistreatment and callousness at play when your life is ‘with the band’. Her realism can be a bit of a salve when the other girls are too starry-eyed.
