‘From’ season 3 episode 9 review: A harrowing kidnapping and a meta interpretation on horror

Fromily, it’s time. From has arrived at its horrifying two-part finale.

In this episode, Donna sarcastically asked Acosta if she wanted her to list the many ways “this place will fuck with your head?” In very much the same way as the town, From’s writers also plot and pick the perfect moments to torment characters. This meta interpretation of the horror storytelling From specializes in raises the stakes of this two-part finale, entitled “Revelations”. What will these characters do to those responsible for these horrors?

(*SPOILERS AHEAD!*)

Night has always been a harbinger for horror on this show, and we get it twice this episode. So much scary stuff was going on, Jim finally snapped into parenting mode and made good decisions. One of the “Revelations” is definitely Jim being capable of listening as he did when he learned about Julie and Randall’s driving lesson. Randall advises Jim to control the things he can, and Jim does by telling Ethan that what happened to Julie wasn’t his fault.

Kenny must have inherited Jim’s stupidity as that is the only explanation of why he would allow Victor to grab an axe. Believe me, the last thing I want to do is agree with Acosta but letting Victor have his axe was extremely stupid. Colony House was founded to let people do whatever they want, however, and Victor having an axe does further the plot.

The living characters have plenty to worry about without Victor having an axe, including Sarah hearing voices again, dead children over the radio and Fatima being kidnapped. Boyd decides search teams of two would be the best way to find Fatima as soon as possible. This led to a worthwhile conversation between Boyd and Kenny. Boyd brings up his Parkinson’s for the first time this season, preparing Kenny for the eventuality of his death.

The stories these characters have been defining themselves with come to a head this episode in heartfelt scenes. Henry recognizes that Victor isn’t the son that he had  envisioned. Jade is the one who makes Henry realize that he can’t expect Victor to behave normally after growing up in this town. This doesn’t have any purpose plot wise, but it is a nice moment for Henry and Victor’s growth.

Speaking of Victor, him and Tabitha reuniting is what leads to this episode’s final bombshell. After being led to the cellar room by the Boy in White and the Anghkooey girl respectively, Victor and Tabitha make physical contact with each other. It is at this moment we get a flashback of Victor’s mom, Miranda, as if Tabitha was remembering them.

In the flashback, we see Miranda leave Victor and his sister, Eloise, in the cellar room before attempting to reach the Bottle Tree. The smiling monster quickly dispatches Miranda as the flashback ends, leaving Tabitha despondent as she tries to make sense of it. This is where the episode leaves the viewers. The bigger picture of From gets ever bigger, making me wonder who painted the picture in the first place?

The week-long wait for the finale will be a long one, leaving viewers pondering about the implications of the revelations in this episode alone and what the fallout will be when the characters start answering what those implications mean and start doing something about them.

Jim becoming a good parent is the biggest twist.
The characters’ insecurities make the horrors more palatable.
Tabitha’s discovery makes the show’s scope bigger than it has ever been.
I’ve been waiting for a good Boyd/Kenny scene and this episode more than delivers.
The breadcrumbs are spread so thin that the revelations lose some impact.
