Christian Ward, Fabio Veras, and Ivan Plascencia are back with their newest installment in the Two-Face series. The issue is a fun episode titled “The Deadly Divorce of the King and Queen of Hearts!” This situation gives the story a Perry Mason vibe as Harvey Dent is in the middle of this Hearts’ war with no escape. This issue promises to give more of the White Church in action with its varied cases, continue the Havey Dent versus Two-Face struggle, and discover who is with the Shadow Hand.

I like how the creative team has made the White Church an actual legal framework in Gotham City. We can see that the cases can range quite a lot. Another element that makes the White Church worthwhile is how it continues the theme of entertainment from the last issue; in this one, the court audience is locked outside, waiting to get in and see the show. Reading those scenes in the White Church takes me back to The Dark Knight Rises’ court scene. The way Christian Ward plays the White Church makes me wish Christopher Nolan could have had that material to reference, along with Aaron Eckhart as Two-Face.

This issue also expands on Lake Cantwell’s private eye skills. We get a little background on her, and with the last issue, we learn that she has excellent eyes to catch on to Harvey’s double bad-sided coin, and this issue focuses on her hearing. Her flashback is an endearing scene showing the bond between her and her father, which is then downcast by learning of her father’s passing. I look forward to seeing if there is more to her association with Two-Face. Is it out of respect, or is it bad blood? Luckily, Cantwell’s skills came in at the right moment to save the case and unveil a more profound, sinister plot. Which strongly builds up a plot point from issue one.

The art team delivers sharp visuals that perfectly match each major scene. When we are in the “real world,” the scene makes us feel trapped in darkness. The vibe is tense and edgy, with danger lurking everywhere. While in the Mind Prison, the place is strangely highlighted and constantly moving, with background characters shuffling about. That scene plays out well for Two-Face, as he has to deal with fakeness and memories to escape and get revenge. In the end, Harvey Dent has two situations to deal with: Two-Face in lock up and the Shadow Hand disrupting the criminal empire of Gotham. The last part reveals who the Shadow Hand members are, and this will invite some investigation into who they are before the next issue.
Two-Face is an exploration of the redemption of Harvey Dent. Harvey is faced with two deadly situations as he has imprisoned Two-Face but has to deal with the attacks on the criminal empire structure by the Shadow Hand. We learn more about Lake Cantwell’s past and investigative abilities. Can Harvey and Lake save the villains before they destroy each other? It is an entertaining story that will leave you wondering why these attacks are happening. Christian Ward continues to grow his twisted idea at Gotham Justice, while Fabio Veras and Ivan Plascencia bring exotic visuals to the wild world of Harvey Dent.
