Batman: Full Moon has offered up an intriguing and serious take on werewolves with the added benefit of Batman. The last issue brought in the inevitable transformation of Batman into a werewolf, which brings us to the penultimate issue in Batman: Full Moon #3. With the aid of Zatanna and John Constantine, can Batman be cured, let alone defeat the rival werewolf in Gotham?
The supernatural horror is strong in the third chapter of this series, with an excellent macabre scene featuring John Constantine to open the issue. It’s a flashback revealing a tough situation he and Zatanna were in fighting monsters, which dovetails into a nice sentiment about John’s take on lycans. The opening adds a bit of action and further steeps the narrative in supernatural weirdness.
From there, the story waxes poetic on werewolves, leading to a Batman-werewolf vs. werewolf fight scene. Three excellently drawn and colored pages by Stevan Subic articulate the brutality and monstrous battle. While they battle, the story cuts away to Batman’s friends and allies all moving to help him, although, at this point, nobody knows how to break Bruce from the curse.
Writer Rodney Barnes weaves in themes of inner darkness that suit a Batman story. The finale will likely delve deeply into the curse of the werewolf and the self-imposed curse of Batman on Bruce, for instance.
After some brutal scenes with the rival werewolf, the last third of the issue is mostly about setting up a new location for Batman to make his final stand. Barnes and Subic wrap any loose ends up, like Bruce being mad at Man-Bat for putting lives in danger and establishing that Batman may need to kill himself to end his werewolf problem truly. The stakes are raised, but it’s a quieter finish, steeped in darkness and stunning visuals by Subic.
Batman: Full Moon #3 effectively blends macabre horror, emotional weight, and jaw-dropping visuals, making it a standout chapter that raises the stakes while artfully exploring Batman’s inner turmoil. Although the slower ending focuses on setup, the strong thematic resonance and powerful artwork make this issue a must-read for fans of supernatural Batman tales.
