Skybound Entertainment and Universal Products & Experiences have announced a remastered black-and-white edition of Michael Walsh’s acclaimed Universal Monsters: Frankenstein, arriving this October as a two-issue limited series.
Originally published as a four-issue miniseries, the new release combines the story into two oversized issues, presenting Walsh’s striking artwork in black and white for the first time.
Written and illustrated by Walsh (Exquisite Corpses), Universal Monsters: Frankenstein explores a previously untold chapter connected to the classic Universal film. The story follows Dr. Henry Frankenstein as he begins assembling the body of his famous creation, robbing the grave of a decorated police officer in search of a powerful pair of hands. His actions leave behind a grieving son whose search for answers will have lasting consequences for Frankenstein and his monstrous experiment.
According to Skybound Assistant Editor Caitlin Chappell, the new format offers readers another way to experience Walsh’s acclaimed artwork.
“Frankenstein is one of those stories that transcends time and cements itself as one of the most iconic and influential monster stories in the horror genre,” Chappell said. “Universal Monsters and Walsh are a dynamic collaboration that do this beloved monster justice, and we’re excited to give fans a classic double feature with Universal Monsters: Frankenstein Black and White Special Issue #1, which collects the original first and second issues in one book.”
Walsh’s Frankenstein is part of Skybound’s expanding Universal Monsters line, which has paired celebrated comics creators with some of horror’s most enduring icons. Previous entries include James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds’ Dracula, Dan Watters, Ram V, and Matthew Roberts’ Creature From the Black Lagoon Lives!, Faith Erin Hicks’ The Mummy, James Tynion IV and DANI’s The Invisible Man, Tyler Boss and Martin Simmonds’ Phantom of the Opera, and the currently releasing Blood of the Wolf Man by Joshua Williamson and Leomacs.
The line will also continue later this year with The Bride of Frankenstein Lives! by Kelly Thompson and Mattia De Iulis.
For readers who missed Walsh’s original series or longtime fans eager to experience it in a new format, the remastered black-and-white edition offers another chance to revisit one of Skybound’s standout horror comics.
