A serial killer in Gotham has put Batman and his vigilante family on high alert. The killer is known as Asema, who is killing teenagers, but so far, they’ve been a mystery. That is, until Detective Comics #1093 reveals new connections to Bruce’s past that longtime Batman fans won’t want to miss.
It’s tricky when modern Batman comics try to add to or even rewrite Bruce Wayne’s past. Sure, there are plenty of gaps that could be filled in, but it’s risky in that it can recontextualize their growth and how they became the Batman. While Bruce’s past comes up in the latest issue, it’s too early to know how much writer Tom Taylor is remixing, but it’s hard not to think about.
I pondered that when reading Detective Comics #1093, which opens a few weeks after Bruce Wayne’s parents died. A young girl named Scarlett Martha Scott and her mother Evelyn visit Thomas and Martha’s memorial outside the Wayne manor gate. It’s an awkward visit as Evelyn seems quite intense, scaring Bruce and forcing Alfred to shoo them away. It’s an important piece of the larger Asema puzzle that is nearly connected with this issue’s cliffhanger.
The main portion of this issue is devoted to Batman and his vigilante family launching a plan to keep tabs on targeted teens. Helping Batman are Robin (Tim Drake), Red Hood, Damian, Oracle, Batgirl, Stephanie Brown, and Signal. They get a cool introduction thanks to Mikel Janin’s sharp art and dynamic layouts.
The layouts don’t stop there as Batman confronts a man barring a child from entering his home. The hulking size of the man compared to Batman is captured well, with a brave moment of Batman laying down the law.
There are a good number of scene changes in this issue that keep the pace up and moving. A check-in with Penguin, a car chase of sorts, and a check-in with Bruce’s new fling are all efficiently laid out. While the mystery surrounding Asema is still vague, there’s enough in this issue to satisfy your action itch and lay out enough clues to keep you wanting more.
Detective Comics #1093 skillfully balances action, mystery, and character work to deliver a gripping chapter in Gotham’s ongoing battle against evil. While the full impact of Bruce’s recontextualized past and Asema’s role are yet to be seen, the issue delivers enough intrigue, sharp artwork, and memorable moments to keep fans eagerly turning the pages.
