‘Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion’ #2 does a lot with Giant-Man

Giant-Man quietly steals the show in an issue that’s all about navigating trust, power, and the murky alliances of the Ultimate Universe.

Miles Morales is in a race to find his baby sister Billie, who has teleported to the new Ultimate Universe. Not to mention the various new twists on heroes and villains, but Billie is in danger thanks to a signature on her person that’s similar to The Maker. That makes her of interest to the Ultimates and other heroes, as well as The Maker’s goons. Miles has dabbled in helping heroes like Ultimate Spider-Man already, but now it’s time to head to Wakanda.

Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #2 opens in Wakanda, where Billie has appeared out of thin air. Readers quickly get a sense of Storm and Black Panther in this universe, that is, if they haven’t been reading Ultimate Black Panther, before soon diving into Miles’ state of mind. It’s easy to see this is a good avenue for readers who haven’t read any Ultimate books, since Miles is right there with us, figuring out the state of the Ultimate Universe.

While Miles’ state of mind is freaked, as it has now been weeks since we last saw him, he’s slowly making his way to Wakanda. Outside of Miles being a bit of a whiner, Cody Ziglar and Deniz Camp do a good job plucking out the nuance of each character as Wasp and Giant-Man drive Miles.

In fact, Giant-Man ends up stealing your interest in this issue. While Black Panther’s heroism and unflinching bravery are evident, Giant-Man is a bit of a juxtaposition as he’s not confident and looks up to Wasp with pure admiration. The latter detail is important since readers know Wasp is working for the bad guys. That wrinkle puts things in perspective, particularly how Giant-Man was nursed back to health by Wasp. Is she manipulating him, or just trying to keep them both alive?

Outside of the good Giant-Man character writing, this issue throws our three heroes into a battle with Wakanda. Jonas Scharf gets to stretch his legs with Wasp going big and Giant-Man going small. It’s a bit silly how the fight starts, but at least it’s filled with bolts of energy being shot and cool anti-powers in use.

Readers of the Ultimate Universe will find all the character nuance interesting, but the cliffhanger page offers a glimpse at a character largely in the background. That’s exciting and should be enlightening when the next issue comes out.

Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #2 balances action, emotional tension, and universe-building, albeit with some uneven beats, but the strong art and intriguing dynamics, especially those involving Giant-Man and Wasp, make it a solid issue that keeps the Ultimate reboot compelling.
