‘Starship Godzilla’ #1 is a top-tier fast paced thrill ride

Blasts out of the gate with a flawless mix of kaiju-scale spectacle, anime-style swagger, and lightning-fast storytelling.

IDW’s Kai-Sei era has come out swinging with two excellent and wildly different entries in Godzilla and Escape the Deadzone, but Starship Godzilla may just be the icing, cherry, and lightning bolt that proves this is a golden age for kaiju comics. Writer Chris Gooch and artist Oliver Ono take what could’ve been a gimmick – a Godzilla-themed spaceship – and spin it into a high-octane, fully realized sci-fi adventure that’s both instantly accessible and brimming with potential. Out October 1st, this first issue is pure adrenaline wrapped in dazzling world building.

If Cowboy Bebop got tangled up in kaiju chaos, you’d have Starship Godzilla. The energy here is rare. Every scene pops with the thrill of discovery, the wit of a sharp crew dynamic, and the kind of cinematic pacing that feels like smash cuts on paper. The first issue moves like a bullet train, each sequence designed to pull you along so fast you’ll be grinning just trying to keep up.

Starship Godzilla #1 opens with a heist. Two crew members from the Starship Godzilla are stealing something of high value and highly dangerous in a kaiju sort of way. One is Ayan, a sporty young woman with a lot of spark and kindness. The other is the bit shifty captain (at least he comes off as the leader) named Rohan. He’s all business and likes to yell the ship pilot Isla’s name quite a bit. The opening sequence is exciting, highly detailed, and as you can see in the full page splash, gorgeously rendered.

From there it’s all gas, no brakes. The search for a loose monster aboard their ship introduces a brilliantly varied cast: a blue-green simian bruiser, the capable pilot Isla, and Isla’s alien friend with a transparent head that’s as charming as it is inventive. Ono nails both the bombastic action and the warm, character-driven beats, balancing grit, humor, and a flair for the unexpected.

This first issue also makes you care about these characters right off the bat. Ayan is going to be the fan-favorite for sure, through her kindness, but also her love of cats and fighting ability. All of the characters read like they have robust backstories and well-thought-out personalities.

The pacing is immaculate, fast but never messy, recalling the kinetic joy of Redline or the swagger of ‘90s anime classics. This isn’t just fun, it’s precision fun, with no wasted panels and no filler scenes. Even the quiet moments hum with energy, pulling you into a world that’s vibrant, lived-in, and brimming with personality.

At one point, the hull of the ship is cracked, and Ono makes you feel the whip of the air getting sucked out. The culprit raises tensions, and there’s a moment where you’ll cry out for the characters to do the right thing. Between this scene and the fallout up an elevator, one can see there isn’t a wasted panel, from character reactions and acting, to a cat reacting to some news on Aya’s shoulder.

And then there’s the cliffhanger. Shocking without feeling cheap, it cracks the story wide open and promises even bigger, wilder payoffs ahead. Having read the second issue, I can confidently say the world building only deepens, and the inventiveness ramps up with each page. This is a series with legs, teeth, and thrusters.

Another exciting element, once you put this book down, is the potential. Godzilla is traditionally an Earth-based creature, but here we see the kaiju concept expanded in a sci-fi way out into the cosmos. The potential is high, especially after you put down the second issue.
