Frank Miller & Todd McFarlane reunite for first Spawn cover collaboration in 30+ years

This September, The Curse of Sherlee Johnson #3 delivers a historic moment for the Spawn Universe with two brand-new variant covers by comics icon Frank Miller, including a highly anticipated team-up with Spawn creator Todd McFarlane.

The issue features Miller’s latest variant, his first Spawn cover in 25 years, showcasing pencils and inks by Miller with colors from Alex Sinclair. The real centerpiece, however, is a 1:25 black-and-white incentive edition: Miller’s pencils re-inked by McFarlane himself. It marks the pair’s first time sharing cover duties since Wizard Magazine #32 back in 1994, and their first-ever collaboration within the world of Spawn.

McFarlane reflected on the reunion:

“Working with friends is always fun. Working with Frank Miller is even better. His impact on comics is undeniable, and being able to collaborate again decades later feels like being a giddy kid all over.”

Miller added:

“Todd and I started in comics for the same reason: the joy of making them. Every now and then, we get to do it together—and it feels like we’re just a couple of kids again.”

Alongside Miller and McFarlane’s milestone covers, the issue will also include variants from the core creative team of Daniel Henriques and Jonathan Glapion, who continue to drive the series forward with colorist FCO Plascencia and letterer AndWorld Design.

Henriques called the collaboration “a dream come true,” while Glapion added that having both Miller and McFarlane lend their talents to the series was “an honor and a thrill.”

Story-wise, issue #3 finds Sherlee and the Stranger surviving their latest ordeal but carrying heavy consequences. A nearby camp hints at refuge, yet ancient forces stir as Heaven descends and Beliafon makes his move—bringing long-hidden truths to the surface.

The Curse of Sherlee Johnson #3 hits comic shops September 17, with a Final Order Cutoff of August 25. The issue will be available in multiple covers:
