Last month marked the debut of a brand-new Captain America run from Eisner-nominated writer Chip Zdarsky and superstar artist Valerio Schiti. Hailed as one of Marvel’s strongest launches of the year, the series opens with a five-part tale set shortly after Steve Rogers first awoke from the ice, chronicling his earliest showdown with Doctor Doom. The story then leaps forward with issue #6, out in December, kicking off a present-day arc that picks up in the aftermath of Doom’s downfall during One World Under Doom. Joining Schiti on art duties will be Frank Alpizar and Delio Diaz, making their Marvel debut later this month on Doomed 2099, who will illustrate issue #6 to set the stage.
This new arc introduces four fresh characters representing nations on the U.N. Security Council: Captain Kingdom (United Kingdom), Captain France (France), Red Widow (Russia), and The Star (China). Collectively called the “United Captains,” they’ll unite with Cap to stabilize Latveria. But as they infiltrate the volatile, high-tech nation, their hidden motives begin to surface. The story solidifies Cap’s role in shaping the current Marvel Universe and serves as a key lead-in to next year’s major events.

A WORLD WITHOUT DOOM!
With Doom gone, Latveria teeters on the edge of civil war. Captain America is dispatched to safeguard innocents and uncover rumors of dangerous stockpiles. But the U.N. Security Council escalates matters by sending in their own “loyal Super-Soldiers.” As rival factions clash and the United Captains pursue their own agendas, Cap must ask himself if peace in Latveria is truly what his allies want.
“I love the idea of ‘official’ super heroes, ones who work within the system,” Zdarsky told ComicBook.com in an exclusive interview. “It felt like there would be some sort of United Nations representatives from the Security Council member countries to deal with situations like Latveria. So, the United Captains came from that idea, a team that isn’t a team, that may have their own agendas.”
Schiti, celebrated for his design work on X-Men titles and G.O.D.S., brings his creative touch to Cap’s new era—revamping Rogers’ costume while also designing striking looks for the United Captains. Each of these designs will be showcased on special variant covers for issues #6-9.
“One of the things I like most about my job is designing new characters,” Schiti said. “It has always been a great hobby of mine, even before becoming a professional! I tried to incorporate some traditional symbols from the countries of origin of the new Captains into their uniforms, which are also practical and suitable for combat.”
Marvel has revealed the main cover, a foil variant by Ivan Tao, and Schiti’s design sheets for the new Captains. Fans can add Captain America to their pull lists now at their local comic shops.
