Before Jason Aaron and Mahmud Asrar’s Bug Wars returns with its next major storyline in 2026, readers will get a taste of what’s to come with a deadly new one-shot this January: Bug Wars: Spyder Wytch Special. The oversized issue dives deep into the dark corners of the Yard, expanding the mythology and setting the stage for the saga’s brutal second chapter.
The special will spotlight the sinister Spider Sect, introducing tales of the exiled sorceress-warrior Wysta the Wayward Wytch. Aaron and Asrar are joined by artist Baldemar Rivas (DC’s Two-Face, Godzilla vs. Kansas City) to bring this shadowy world to life.
“The ride through the Yard has only just begun,” Aaron teased. “The Spyder Wytch Special explores the witches of the spider sect, and after that, we’ll return to the Slaymaker family with Book Two. Expect more murderous bugs and tiny sword-wielding warriors along the way.” Asrar added, “This collection represents years of our efforts swarming together—an exciting way to continue Slade’s journey in the world of Bug Wars.”
For those new to the series, Bug Wars follows Slade and Sydney Slaymaker, brothers bound by their father’s legacy and divided by their relationship to insects. When a mysterious clash shrinks Slade to insect-size, he’s thrust into a savage world of ant armies, beetle-riders, and spell-casting spider witches. Think Honey, I Shrunk the Kids colliding with Conan the Barbarian.

Originally announced with a buzz-worthy ashcan at New York Comic Con, Bug Wars quickly earned critical acclaim, sell-outs, and a spot on IGN’s “Most Anticipated Comics of 2025” list. Now, with the Spyder Wytch Special arriving in January, Aaron and Asrar are only just beginning to spin their web of insect-driven fantasy carnage
