Doctor Doom falls, but Marvel’s next villain could be even worse in ‘The Will of Doom’ #1

This December, THE WILL OF DOOM #1, a one-shot by Chip Zdarsky and CAFU, explores the aftermath of ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM, setting the stage for the next era of the Marvel Universe.

The reign of Doctor Doom is crumbling.

This week’s release of One World Under Doom #7 showed readers Marvel’s most infamous villain making a last, desperate attempt to cling to power. His downfall may be inevitable, but the effects of his rule will reverberate across the Marvel Universe for years to come.

That fallout kicks off this December with The Will of Doom #1, a special one-shot from Eisner-nominated writer Chip Zdarsky and superstar artist CAFU. From there, all eyes shift to Steve Rogers as Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti propel their Captain America run into the present day with Captain America #6, featuring additional art by Frank Alpizar and Delio Diaz.

A New Villain Rises

Captain America’s mission to stabilize Latveria won’t be easy. Enter Salvation, a mysterious new foe with ties to Latveria’s darkest chapters. Meanwhile, the long shadow of Doom’s plans will resurface, and the Red Hulk—General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross—seeks vengeance for his imprisonment during One World Under Doom. His presence will be seeded in The Will of Doom #1 before exploding across Marvel’s line.

Doom’s Legacy Lives On

As Zdarsky puts it: “A Latveria with Doom in charge is incredibly dangerous. A Latveria without Doom in charge is even worse. Thunderbolt Ross and Latveria’s new leader, Salvation, have their eyes on Latveria’s deadliest secrets, and whoever gets their hands on them will be a threat that will undo the world.”

Zdarsky added: “Between THE WILL OF DOOM and CAPTAIN AMERICA, we’re charting a new course for the Marvel Universe with one simple statement: Doom always has a plan.”

Marvel has also revealed a range of stunning covers tied to this new era. Jonas Scharf provides the main cover for The Will of Doom #1, while Josemaria Casanovas spotlights Salvation on a variant for Captain America #6. Zdarsky himself contributes a Doom-centric variant for the issue, and J. Scott Campbell offers a wraparound cover for The Will of Doom #1 featuring Marvel’s biggest heroes.

With Doom’s reign over, Latveria’s future—and the Marvel Universe’s next phase—hangs in the balance. Be sure to add Captain America to your pull list and preorder The Will of Doom #1 at your local comic shop today.
