Welcome back to another edition of TMNT Tuesday, you’re one-stop shop for TMNT exclusives and insider access. This week, new ongoing TMNT artist Freddie E. Williams II joins us to unpack his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #15 cover, complete with commentary and process imagery! This is a first look at the cover, which is colored by Andrew Dalhouse.
The cover features Splinter’s return, and his adoring Turtles are not just happy, but filled with tears of joy. That’s not all, there’s also a mysterious character at the top left. While IDW is not spoiling who the mysterious character is in the background of cover #15, they have confirmed this is a character making their debut in the IDW continuity.
Oh, and that’s not all, we’ve got a first look at Freddie’s interior art of Splinter (not yet inked or final).
Without further Ado, take it away, Freddie!
“SPLINTER!!!! Splinter is my favorite character in all of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle universe, and it has been SO HARD not to talk about him in these podcasts and interviews in the promotion for my run on the TMNT series!!!
Imagine having a father whose soul has traversed centuries to love and protect you, a father infinitely wise, kind, and patient… an amazing teacher and Sensei, AND he’s the best martial artist in the world!? IMAGINE THAT- a father who finds a way back from paradise (the afterlife), to protect your future! Splinter genuinely means a lot to me, and he’s the core for this whole story arc!
“Drawing Splinter, especially scenes of him looking at his sons with love – with tears in his eyes from his joy at being reunited with them, is over 80% of the reason I have totally rearranged my life – to MAKE SURE I didn’t miss out on drawing his return in this story arc of the Turtles!
Gene Yang’s writing for Splinter is perfect, the story he is crafting around this return and the terrible and unforeseen consequences of his return, is a GRIPPING and emotional story, which is a wonderful treat to me, because I get to be the FIRST FAN of Gene’s TMNT story! I’m not joking when I say that when I get to the end of each of Gene’s scripts, it leaves me wanting more, and I think readers will feel the same way!”
