‘Exquisite Corpses’ #7 ramps up the danger on every front

Killer-versus-killer combat with rising dread and explosive twists that push the series into thrilling new territory.

Tensions are high in Exquisite Corpses #7, the latest chapter in the action-horror series from James Tynion IV and Michael Walsh. The next ruler of America is up for grabs as the super-rich watch their fates get chosen by serial killers in a small town, unaware of what’s going on. Four of the killers in the bracket appear in the issue, with one appearing who hasn’t shown up since the first issue!

Exquisite Corpses #7 opens with the rich watchers of the games goofing off, with a few taking things super seriously. It turns out the game master is speeding up the game as the fires that are closing in on the townsfolk rage. Much like the fires, this issue heightens the danger and the sense of imminent threat.

Outside of quick check-ins, which are always efficient in keeping us up to date on key characters, this issue focuses on The Lone Gunman (TLG) and Fox Mask Killer (FMK) going toe to toe in one scene. Pretty Boy not loving the fact that Layla Blaze is going to ruin his desire to stay out of the fray. These two scenes bounce from all-out well-choreographed action to the tensions of two killers knowing what comes next. These two scenes balance into a near-constant sense of tension and danger.

The action scene between FMK and TLG is exciting as TLG is bulkier and more like a battering ram, while FMK is smaller and adept with a sword. The two fighting is like a dance, and since TLG was introduced in the first issue, we root for him, while FMK has stolen our interest in the last few issues, since she seems to have a conscience.

Meanwhile, writers Walsh and Tynion make you feel for Pretty Boy, who is aware these “games” are bologna and wants nothing to do with it. It’s nice to see his story progress far more than in previous issues, as he seemed passive, and now we know why. Sadly, folks like Layla Blaze are there for the thrill of the kill, and her obsession with fire leads to an explosive twist. They butt heads, and it’s a reminder that not all killers in this series are created equal.

Closing out the issue isn’t just an explosive twist, but a twist on the uber-rich watching on. Given that the bracket at the end is barely visible, one can imagine the series will take a new turn in its last third.

Exquisite Corpses #7 is a gripping and tightly wound chapter that ramps up the danger on every front—delivering sharp character beats, standout action, and a finale that promises major upheaval as the series barrels into its final act.
