When we last left Fallout, a guys day out between Maximus and the special envoy representing the Commonwealth chapter of the Brotherhood of Steel takes a dramatic turn. As a result, Maximus creates a potentially sticky situation for his own local chapter. At least Lucy’s luck is a little better as she is rescued while held captive by the Roman Empire inspired Legion.
Fallout has done a great job this season using its flashbacks, and “The Demon in the Snow” is no exception. Not only does it expand the world providing glimpses of the war that led to the post-apocalyptic event, but even ties into more recent developments such as the relationship between Cooper Howard and Charlie Whiteknife who was introduced in the previous episode. There is even a fun callback to the video games as we see one of the more iconic beasts from the source material.
More importantly, it helps paint the Ghoul in a different light. He is usually your typical cool as a cucumber and deadly gunslinger, but here, he is much more vulnerable. It’s a moment of genuine fear, which we rarely see. In addition, its a smart approach using the parallels of the cold opening and the ending to build up the threat in the cliffhanger. If it’s something that can make the Ghoul scared and jittery, it must be really dangerous. The use of repeated dialog in different context also adds a funny twisted take. Overall, an effective use of storytelling.

Similarly, Maximus has a pretty compelling subplot. He is further established as a man of action, even though it might not be the correct one. His confrontation with Elder Cleric Quintus gradually creates tension and suspense until it all boils over. He realizes there are fundamental differences between him and the Brotherhood that can no longer be maintained by their continued association. When it rains, it pours and Fallout unleashes even more chaos in its guilty pleasure kind of way. It’s violent, humorous, meta, and all sorts of entertaining.
Even some of the minor developments are intriguing as we return to the Vaults. The two Vault-Tec overseers aren’t on the same page suggesting there are more agendas at play than the one from the shady corporation. The secret regarding Stephanie Harper particularly raises questions about her loyalty. Usually the Vault dwellers are used for comic relief with their mundane clubs and snack allowances so it’s actually a change of pace to add a little more dark mystery and seriousness.
“The Demon in the Snow” is a great episode adding complexity to its main characters and creating more intrigue and mystery while throwing in some of its signature dark comedy and chaos.
New episodes of Fallout release Wednesdays on Prime Video.
