Battle Quest Comics, the fantasy-focused publisher, has announced its first collaborative comic series with tabletop powerhouse Plaid Hat Games, bringing the world of Summoner Wars to comics for the first time.
“Summoner Wars has a long history of storytelling, and our fans are always clamoring for more,” said Plaid Hat Games founder Colby Dauch. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with Battle Quest Comics and help this world further come to life in a lush and vibrant medium.”
Battle Quest publisher Andrew Kafoury echoed that sentiment, pointing to tabletop games as fertile ground for narrative expansion. “Everyone wants to find new stories and new worlds,” Kafoury said. “I’ve found there’s no better place to look than the tabletop games coming from creators like Plaid Hat.”
The Summoner Wars comic is co-written by Paul Cornell (Doctor Who) and Justin Zimmerman (The 27 Run), with art by Patrick Macchi (Captain Canuck), colors by Mo Hollowell (Civil War), and story development in collaboration with Plaid Hat Games. Covers will be provided by Plaid Hat’s Martin Abel.
Zimmerman emphasized that the team approached the project as a story first, not a tie-in. “We concentrated on making something that works as a comic above all else,” he said. “Each and every page is designed to blow your mind.”
Cornell added that the appeal was immediate. “I’ve loved writing dialogue for such quirky characters in this fun, adventure-packed world,” he said.
Originally launched in 2009, Summoner Wars began as a hit tabletop card game and is now in its second edition, earning consistent praise for its faction-driven design and tactical gameplay. The comic marks the latest evolution of the property as it reaches a new audience.
Summoner Wars will join Battle Quest’s growing fall lineup alongside NO’MADD: The Unconquerable, Steel Siege, The 27 Run, and The Trident of Aurelia. More details—including an official release date—are expected next month during the ComicsPRO Annual Meeting.
