Dan Slott returns to ‘Brand New Day’ with a new ‘Spectacular Spider-Man’ series

Dan Slott returns to one of Spider-Man’s most influential modern eras with a new ‘Spectacular Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ series.

Marvel is revisiting one of its most talked-about Spider-Man eras this May with Spectacular Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a new ongoing series that reunites key creators from the original storyline.

The series is written by Dan Slott, who helped define the 2008 Brand New Day era, with art by Marcus To. Covers for the new book will be handled by Phil Jimenez, and each issue will also feature backup stories by Marcos Martin.

Originally launching in 2008, Brand New Day marked a major shift for Spider-Man comics. Slott worked alongside a rotating lineup of writers and artists across more than one hundred issues over nearly three years. The era reshaped Peter Parker’s world and left a lasting imprint on Spider-Man storytelling that continues to influence the character today. Now, Slott and several of those collaborators are returning to revisit that chapter in continuity.

The new series kicks off with Spider-Man getting his hands on a powerful piece of Kingpin’s criminal infrastructure known as the Lexicon. The directory contains critical information about Wilson Fisk’s operations across New York City, and Peter believes taking it could cripple organized crime. The problem is that he is not the only one who wants it. Mr. Negative sees an opportunity to strike at Fisk’s empire, and Frank Castle has his own reasons for wanting access to that information. What starts as an attempt to make the city safer quickly turns into a dangerous situation that puts Spider-Man squarely in the crosshairs.

Slott made it clear how personal the character remains to him. “Spider-Man is my favorite character in all of fiction. Heart on my sleeve here—I love writing Spider-Man,” Slott said. “We’re going to reveal hidden secrets and plant explosive seeds that will pay off and affect what’s happening in Spider-Man’s world today! These will be stories that matter and that will have major consequences!”

Slott also praised the creative team joining him for this return. “We’ve got the killer art team of Marvel’s biggest secret weapon, Marcus To, and new shorts by the Inkpot Award-winning legend, Marcos Martin!” Slott said. “With Marcus, this is going to be one of the best looking books on the stand, and with Marcos, we’re going to have these incredible short features that will ensure that NEW readers can jump right in, even if they’ve never read a Brand New Day issue!”

Marvel has also released Phil Jimenez’s cover for issue one along with a variant cover by Pat Gleason and preview pages from the interior.
