Exclusive: Tula Lotay unleashes a haunting first look at ‘Till Death’ from Clover Press

AIPT exclusively unveils Tula Lotay’s haunting cover for ‘Till Death’ a gothic love story decades in the making about a restless spirit who breaks the rules of the afterlife to reunite with her husband.

Big news for fans of writer Michael Schwartz (R.L. Stine’s Zombie TownArmored, and The ABCs of Death) and artist Tula Lotay (Eisner award-winning Somna; Blue Rose, Bodies, and All-Star Batman) as the duo is collaborating on a brand new comic book, called Till Death.

AIPT has the exclusive first look and reveal of this sublime cover art by Lotay.

Michael Schwartz and Rachael Schaefer (BAFTA award-winning writer, showrunner, and producer) serve as co-writers on this new venture, while Gaia Cardinali (Comic artist and colorist for Disney, Tunué, and Madcave Studios) is working on the interior art for this thrilling read.

Schwartz and co-writer Rachael Schaefer share the premise of the book:

“It is about a woman named Vivian who has died in a horrific car accident in the 1960s and has spent decades as a restless spirit, waiting at her gravesite for her beloved husband to die so they can ascend to the afterlife together. When another woman, Pat, is buried in her husband’s plot, Vivian spirals into despair. Just when she thinks there is no hope, Mack, a troubled man with demons of his own, crashes into the cemetery during a skydiving accident. His near-death experience gives him the ability to see ghosts. Because Vivian cannot stray from her remains, she convinces Mack to exhume her bones, and the two set off on a cross-country journey to find Vivian’s husband. By doing so, they break a sacred rule of the afterlife, which puts reapers on their trail, determined to wipe them from existence to right the afterlife wrongs.”

Lotay was enamored with the unique tale, so the idea for the cover art came to her immediately, “Till Death is such a rich story, it was easy to visualize exactly what I wanted for the cover. My favorite setting, a graveyard and a ‘Night of the Living Dead’ aesthetic. Vintage spookiness in all its glory.”

For Michael, he says that it’s been a dream come true to have her spearhead the cover concept for Till Death: “She’s been one of our favorite artists for years, and her stunning artwork elevates the book in ways we’re incredibly proud of,” he says.

Schaefer adds that this book was years in the making so for it to finally come to fruition has been a dream come true, “this idea has been with us since 2010, and after years of talking about it, Michael and I finally began work on the book in 2023. Now we’re excited to finally release it into the world,” she explains.

Schwartz has long been a collaborator with Publisher Hank Kanalz, who said it was a no-brainer when this opportunity was presented to him: “We’re big fans of Michael Schwartz at Clover Press, and when he pitched us on this new graphic novel, we took half a second to say YES. He and Rachael Schaefer make a great writing team, and Gaia Cardinali brings the story to hauntingly beautiful life, ” he adds.

With the eerie yet ethereal theme about a tale of enduring love, I, for one, cannot wait for this to drop and be shared with everyone. If you’re as excited as I am to read this, Michael encourages all fans to sign up for notifications when the Kickstarter launches.
