Marvel reveals ‘X-Men ’97: Season Two’ prelude continuing the animated series’ shocking cliffhanger

Marvel is bridging the gap before X-Men ’97 returns to Disney+ with a new prelude comic that picks up after Season One’s massive cliffhanger and follows the X-Men scattered across time.

The hit animated series X-Men ’97 returns this summer on Disney+, and Marvel is giving fans another way to bridge the gap between seasons. This time, the story continues in comic shops with X-Men ’97: Season Two, an official prelude comic series arriving ahead of the new season.

The five-issue limited series reunites writer Steve Foxe and artist Salva Espin, who previously teamed up for the prelude comic tied to the show’s first season. Their new story picks up immediately after the explosive ending of Season One and sets the stage for the next chapter of Marvel Animation’s mutant saga.

According to Marvel, the series explores the fallout of the events that closed the first season while introducing new characters and teams that will play key roles in Season Two. The comic also digs into the major plot threads waiting for viewers when the animated series returns.

Extinction-Day has already reshaped the world, and the X-Men are scattered across time. The new comic follows the mutants left behind as they struggle to survive in a world that still fears and hunts them. With the team fractured and displaced, the biggest question remains where the X-Men are and when they might return.

Foxe says returning to the world of X-Men ’97 has been an exciting opportunity to expand the show’s story.

“I feel exceptionally grateful that Salva Espin, Matt Milla, and I get to tell more stories fleshing out the world of X-Men ‘97!” Foxe shared. “Everyone who watched Season One knows the team left us one heck of an era-spanning cliffhanger, and our prequel for Season Two doesn’t take any cheats or shortcuts around that wild status quo.”

Foxe also explained that the comic was developed alongside the animation team to ensure the story fits naturally within the show’s ongoing narrative.

“We got to work closely with the series team to make sure this comic is a vital, additive experience for our mutants—what’s left of the X-Men, anyway…” he continued.

Marvel also revealed new cover art for the series. Returning X-Men ’97 cover artist Todd Nauck provides the main cover, while Jhony Caballero contributes a variant inspired by the memorable basketball looks from Season One.

More news about X-Men ’97 Season Two is expected in the coming months.
