‘Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge – Echoes of the Empire’ #1 is a crowd-pleasing chapter

A mysterious Jedi relic ties together past and present in a Batuu-set adventure packed with iconic heroes and villains.

The synergy of the Disney Galaxy’s Edge park and comics has been going on for years, and it’s given a new boost in the form of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge – Echoes of the Empire #1 out this week. The new series, from writer Ethan Sacks and artists Jethro Morales and Roi Mercado, further shows how important the Black Spire Outpost is in the past and the present. In the new series, Rey gets new info on a key mission on Batuu while on Batuu with the likes of Darth Vader and Boba Fett thrown in for good measure.

It’s safe to say Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge – Echoes of the Empire #1 has everything you want in a Star Wars tale, be it bounty hunters, Jedi fighting, or new lore to hang on the various movies and shows. Sacks also uses the main cast, with a story set prior to the rescue of Han from Jabba the Hutt. The accessibility for fans new and old is obvious, and the hope for new lore with a mystical McGuffin adds a layer of intrigue.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge – Echoes of the Empire #1 opens with Rey seeking an ancient Jedi Weapon on Batuu. The carnal alien she seeks information from soon dives into a tale of the past, which ties in Luke, Leia, C-3PO, R2-D2, Chewbacca, and even Yoda. On their heels is Darth Vader.

I’m a sucker for ancient Jedi and Sith artifacts, so the main hook sold me on the premise. What that McGuffin is, however, remains a mystery throughout this issue. At the same time, seeing classic characters like Luke and Lei be entrenched in something Rey is seeking many years later, it’s clear the universe’s continuity is robust and intriguing.

The art team gets to throw Luke against Boba Fett in an exciting action sequence. Well choreographed, it’s believable Boba Fett can handle himself against such a powerful Jedi like Luke, with both getting their licks in. Still, while the battle is exciting, it definitely serves as fan-service filler. Like any good Marvel Star Wars comic, the creative team does a fantastic job with likenesses, nailing all the main characters. The aliens also look great, especially in a cantina scene, making this read like a genuine Star Wars tale.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge – Echoes of the Empire #1 delivers a crowd-pleasing mix of classic characters, new lore, and high-energy action, all anchored by the ever-expanding importance of Batuu. Ethan Sacks crafts a story that feels both familiar and forward-looking, tying together timelines in a way that rewards longtime fans while remaining easy to jump into. The mystery at the center adds intrigue, even if this first issue holds back on answers. Paired with strong visuals and recognizable character beats, it is a solid start that leans into what makes Star Wars fun.
