Thor is gone and Marvel is celebrating issue #800 with a very different hero

Marvel celebrates ‘Thor’ #800 but the God of Thunder is still missing.

Marvel is marking a major milestone this August with Thor #800, and the spotlight is on a very different kind of hero.

Written by Al Ewing with art by Pasqual Ferry, Mortal Thor #14/LGY #800 continues the current saga with Sigurd Jarlson at its center. With the original God of Thunder gone, Sigurd has stepped into the role in his own way, relying on courage and determination rather than divine power. Now, he faces his greatest test yet as The Serpent pushes him to his limits in a trial that could decide the fate of the Ten Realms.

The anniversary issue builds on the fallout from Immortal Thor, where Thor sacrificed himself to fuel a spell cast by Loki. That spell erased him from memory and severed Asgard’s connection to Midgard. The story has since continued through Mortal Thor, following Sigurd as he tries to live a normal life while dealing with threats tied to Thor’s past, including Donald Blake and Mr. Hyde. Each encounter has brought him closer to understanding his connection to the missing god, with this issue set to deliver a turning point.

“Issue #800 wraps up some long-running plotlines that have plagued Thor since before his death, but it also sets Sigurd Jarlson on a quest that will send him through the realms of myth to an Asgard that’s never needed a Thor more than now,” said Ewing. “Sigurd is still without any powers beyond his own courage, wits, and willpower — can a mortal face the trials of the gods, save ten worlds, and bring the Thunder God back to the people who need him? I couldn’t ask for a better artist than Pasqual Ferry to help tell this story, and I hope you all enjoy the ride we’ve got planned for you. #800 is only the beginning!”

The oversized issue will also include additional stories from Chris Condon and artist Jesse Lonergan, along with a contribution from Kieron Gillen, returning to a character he helped define in earlier runs.

In the main story, Sigurd finds himself trapped in a brutal scenario crafted by The Serpent, forced to prove his worth without even a weapon in hand. His journey will take him across mythic realms as he attempts to restore Thor and bring balance back to a fractured world.

Marvel has also revealed a lineup of covers for the issue, including a main cover by Alex Ross and a variant by Ryan Stegman, along with interior pages showcasing Ferry’s work.

Mortal Thor #14/LGY #800 arrives this August, kicking off the next phase of Ewing’s ongoing story and setting the stage for what comes next.
