Skybound and Image Comics have announced Tales of Wonder, a new limited series from writer and artist Steve Skroce, colorist Ian Herring, and letterer Pat Brosseau. The debut issue arrives in comic shops on September 2, 2026.
The series centers on two former comic book collaborators whose fractured friendship is put to the ultimate test when the heroes and villains they created decades earlier suddenly become real.
Skroce, known for Maestros, Wolverine, and his work on The Matrix films, describes the project as a deeply personal story wrapped inside a superhero spectacle.
“This is a story I’ve dreamt of telling for years. It’s a tale about the many pitfalls of creative collaboration. When things go south, lifelong friendships can end and the axe grinding can last for decades,” said Skroce. “Tales of Wonder is about finding your way back from that, it’s about believing in a second chance to get things right, it’s about the value of friendship, and it’s all wrapped up in a full throttle, action packed Superhero adventure. I hope you dig it.”
The story follows Stu and Jake, whose friendship began during World War II before comic book success pulled them apart. Their shared creations transformed Wonder Comics into a worldwide phenomenon, but years of resentment and disputes over credit eventually drove a wedge between them.
Now reunited to launch the America’s Freedom Force cinematic universe, the pair discover that the superheroes and monsters from their comics have stepped off the page and into reality. To save the world, they must confront both their creations and the decades of bitterness that have defined their relationship.
Skybound Executive Editor Ben Abernathy praised the project and its creator.
“Steve Skroce is a generational talent, and I’m beyond thrilled that his latest series is here at Skybound,” said Abernathy. “His poignant tale of two Golden Age comic book creators as they face their greatest creations, literally, is a tale for the ages!”
