Marvel’s mutants are about to face one of science fiction’s deadliest species.
Marvel Comics and 20th Century Studios have announced Alien vs. X-Men, a new crossover event launching this September that brings the X-Men into direct conflict with the terrifying Xenomorphs.
Following the success of Alien vs. Avengers, Marvel is once again merging its superhero universe with the iconic horror franchise. The new series is written by Kieron Gillen and illustrated by Geraldo Borges, with an additional four-part backup story from legendary X-Men writer Chris Claremont.
The main story begins when the X-Men embark on a mission to recover a Phoenix egg. Instead, they return to Earth carrying something far more dangerous. What follows is a brutal clash between mutants and Xenomorphs, placing the future of the team in jeopardy as the alien threat spreads.
Gillen, a longtime fan of the Alien franchise, said the project fulfills a lifelong dream.
“Alien was the first R-rated movie I ever saw. Aliens is one of the four founding teenage films that I built my understanding of story structure upon. As a hormonal teen, I had a looming Alien poster hung over my bed. I love Aliens so much that I am unhelpfully explaining beats to Geraldo by referencing two-second sequences featuring tertiary characters, as if he cares about Ferro and Dietrich as much as I do. So, yes, this is some prime-grade bucket list stuff for me, and I’m highly enjoying taking the X-Men on an X-press elevator to hell.”
Alongside the main feature, Claremont returns to one of his most famous X-Men creations for a backup story centered on Kitty Pryde. The tale throws Kitty into a nightmare scenario as she finds herself caught between two of Marvel’s most dangerous extraterrestrial threats: the Brood and the Xenomorphs.
“For me, the coolest aspect here is returning to a universe where I can pit my deadliest alien predators against their movie counter-parts, with Kitty caught in the middle,” Claremont said. “Kitty brings a hero’s perspective to the challenge that embraces the heart and soul of the X-Men. This story is cram-packed with adventure – plus some crazy surprises along the way.”
Marvel has also revealed covers by Ryan Stegman and Ivan Shavrin ahead of the series’ debut.
