Hello Kitty and Friends: Hello World is a good first comic book for kids or just anyone new to the medium. This issue serves as an introduction to Hello Kitty and her friends that will be featured in the comics; you can expect to see a lot of popular characters from the Sanrio USA line up, as well as cameos of newly-added characters.
Mariko Tamiki takes us into the world of Hello Kitty, which feels fresh and is surprisingly modern. While it’s mostly targeted towards kids, with moments that are simple and easy to follow, there are some aspects of the story that are geared more towards teens and adults who are online. If you’re familiar with Hello Kitty and Friends, Tamiki captures their personalities perfectly. There’s a ton of cheeky jokes and adorable moments that you would expect to see in any Hello Kitty show or video.

This comic is one that I would have loved as a kid and it’s one of my most anticipated comics of the year. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I am excited to see more characters be introduced, as well as getting more content of some of my favorite characters. This issue doesn’t waste any time with too much exposition or setup for the next issue; it gets right into the story while introducing the cast of characters. I liked how it felt like a complete story while setting up the mystery premise for the series. Tamiki has you hooked until the very last page and leaves you wanting to binge read the series.
Cody Lemieux’s art is way too cute and a perfect match with Tamiki’s writing. The texture of the art looks as if it was drawn by colored pencils which adds to the nostalgic feel to it. With iconic characters like Hello Kitty, there’s always that fear of them not looking like you would expect them to but Lemieux nails all of the small details that only hardcore fans would notice and has them looking bright and as colorful as we all know them to be. Lemieux even captures small details in the background that really bring you into the world of Hello Kitty and into Friend Town. There’s truly no detail too small, as even letterer Becca Carey puts a small flare on the narration bubbles to immerse you into this comic.
