Daniel Warren Johnson’s ‘Chainkata’ gets trailer, additional details

Image Comics also confirmed that ‘Chainkata’ will receive a major promotional push at this month’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Revealed earlier today on Daniel Warren Johnson’s X account, Image Comics has released new info and a trailer for Chainkata. Out in November, the brand-new ongoing series from Image Comics promises to be his biggest science fiction story yet.

Johnson summed up the book’s premise in characteristic fashion:

“CHICKS. WITH CHAINSAWS. IN SPACE.”

The new series follows Luma, a warrior queen armed with a chainsaw who journeys across space in search of an unknown power. Though she longs for peace, violence seems to follow wherever she goes, carrying her from one black hole to the next in a story filled with cosmic danger and explosive action.

According to Image Comics, Chainkata combines the large-scale science fiction adventure found in Beta Ray Bill and Space-Mullet with the emotional character work that defined Extremity and Do A Powerbomb. Colors will once again be provided by longtime collaborator Mike Spicer.

Johnson revealed that Chainkata has been years in the making.

“Ever since my start in comics, I’ve wanted to make a science fiction book that truly felt different from everything already out there,” Johnson said. “It was 2017 when I drew the first sketch of Luma, Chainkata’s main character. From that point, it took me nine years to come up with a story that I felt was worthy of being on the stands, and Chainkata is the end result of that journey.”

He added that the project pushed him further than any of his previous work.

“I have pushed myself narratively and artistically further than I ever have before, and I believe it shows in the pages you’ll be reading this fall. Please join me for an epic like none other. The Chain awaits you.”

Johnson has steadily become one of comics’ most celebrated creators through books such as Extremity, Murder Falcon, Wonder Woman: Dead Earth, Beta Ray Bill, and the Eisner Award-winning Do A Powerbomb. More recently, his work on Skybound’s Transformers has helped redefine the Energon Universe while continuing to earn widespread critical acclaim.

Image Comics also confirmed that Chainkata will receive a major promotional push at this month’s San Diego Comic-Con, where fans can expect additional reveals and appearances ahead of the series’ November debut.
