Zoe Thorogood reveals she was originally set to write ‘Absolute Wonder Woman’

Before Kelly Thompson redefined Diana in Absolute Wonder Woman, Zoe Thorogood was set to write the series, but a deeply personal realization led her to step away.

Acclaimed cartoonist Zoe Thorogood has revealed that she was originally attached to write DC’s hit series Absolute Wonder Woman before stepping away from the project, saying the book was ultimately “absolutely meant to be written” by current writer Kelly Thompson.

The revelation came via a post on X (formerly Twitter), where Thorogood reflected on seeing pages from the series and the path not taken.

“Every time I see panels from Absolute Wonder Woman and remember originally I was going to write it, I shudder because that book was absolutely meant to be written by Kelly,” Thorogood wrote. “I dropped out of the project because I knew deep down I wasn’t the guy to write Wonder Woman (well, and my life was falling apart and my brother killed himself, but that’s besides the point).”

Thorogood continued by expressing admiration for the direction the series ultimately took.

“But I think that. Idk. It would be cool to work more with DC, but I honestly think I’m just supposed to be an Absolute Weird Indie Guy.”

The comments offer a fascinating glimpse into the development of one of DC’s most successful launches of the last year. Written by Kelly Thompson with art by Hayden Sherman, Absolute Wonder Woman has become one of the standout books of the Absolute Universe line, earning praise for its bold reimagining of Diana and its mythic, horror-inflected approach to the character.

While fans may now be imagining what a Thorogood-penned Absolute Wonder Woman could have looked like, the It’s Lonely at the Centre of the Earth and Hack/Slash: Back to School creator suggested that her sensibilities may be better suited to other corners of the DC Universe.

Do not skip this one. It’s incredible.

When asked by a fan which DC character she would choose to write if given complete freedom, Thorogood had a quick answer:

“Probably Harley Quinn. I don’t think I’m built for writing heroes, haha. As long as I could draw her too 🙂‍↕️”

Coincidentally, Harley Quinn is getting a full backstory in Absolute Batman #22, out this week.

The prospect of a Zoe Thorogood-written and illustrated Harley Quinn project is one that will likely spark increased interest. Given Thorogood’s acclaimed work exploring mental health, identity, and emotional vulnerability through innovative visual storytelling, Harley may indeed be a natural fit.

For now, though, Thorogood appears content embracing the role she jokingly assigned herself: an “Absolute Weird Indie Guy.”
