Harrow County #19 Review

In this issue, Emmy meets a boy who strikes her fancy a bit. As you might imagine, that causes things to get weird.

Observations

  • Tyler Crook—always on point with the gorgeous opening double page spread.
  • We should all be grateful that Emmy is a better person than most of us.
  • New kid (Luke) seems okay. Not too sure about his uncles, though.
  • Sometimes I forget how awkward it can probably get between Emmy and her dad…since he tried to kill her and all…
  • Yep. Luke’s uncles are definitely old-timey douche bros.
  • Yeah, these hunters are about to learn a very harsh lesson.
  • GOOD LORD.

The Verdict

I don’t want to give away the big reveal, but lets just say that Crook nails it. That being said, the story gives away what could have been an even cooler surprise much earlier than it had to.

As far as the rest of the issue goes, it’s still very unclear how this will play out. Bunn leaves things open to the story continuing in a number of different directions. As it stands now, however, Harrow County #19 could almost read as an enjoyable stand-alone tale. Bunn does a great job setting up the new characters as well as revisiting some very important dynamics in the relationship Emmy has with her father. He also does a fantastic job with the issue’s opening, which reminds us just how dangerous Emmy could be if she ever wanted to break bad.

Strangely, the one-page back up story by Crook (w) and Aud Koch (a) is most definitely the start of an intriguing multi-part tale.
