Abe Sapien #1 (Dark Horse)

Is It Good? Abe Sapien: Dark and Terrible #1 Review

Written by Mike Mignola and Scott Allie, with art by Sebastian Fiumara, this new Abe Sapien comic follows the events of an Abe recently on the lamb, or rather…uh, fish, from the B.P.R.D. headquarters.

Things are pretty slow on the story front, consisting of dialogue about Abe from some Hobos on a train car Abe is on who reflect upon the current state of the world now that a metric ass ton of beasties have arisen and wreaked havoc. One of those establishin’ comics, I reckon.

Fiumara has some amazing monsters. Check out this sucker. Have fun sleeping:

Fiumara saves this one from being just another in an amazingly vast amount of B.P.R.D. forgettables as of late. That’s not to say they aren’t all entertaining, but honestly, the way he draws Abe—and people in general—sticks with you. He draws an impressive Abe Sapien. It may be my favorite depiction of Abe yet.

  • Amazing monsters
  • Great looking Abe Sapien
  • Interesting to see some people sitting during the calm in the monster storm
  • Not a lot of action in the present
  • A lot of dialogue, most of it reflecting on past events

Yes, it is. Is it amazing? No, but the art saves it from getting lost under an ever increasing pile of B.P.R.D. titles. Check it out if you love the intelligent fish man, and hobos talking about monsters.
