Comic Book Preview: 4/17/13 – Daddy Doomsday Meets Miami Beach

Each Monday, AiPT writers David Brooke and Brendan Harvey discuss their favorite bad and good covers of the upcoming Wednesday’s comic releases, selecting among them AiPT’s Covers of the Week.

This week, Cyclops calls himself daddy, Batwoman shows some skin, and Wolverine vacations in Miami.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Cable and X-Force #7

Comic Book Preview: 4/17/13 - Daddy Doomsday Meets Miami Beach

Salvador Larroca

Dave: So is he a pimp or some kind of proof Nietzsche was right? The blank background and inexpressive Cyclops must have been confusing for the Marvel editors. I could see an editor going, “okay this isn’t enough…let’s slap some big white text on this puppy. Mimosas at noon!”

Brendan: Honestly, without the “Daddy’s Home” this would be nothing more than a bland sketch of Cyke. Good thing those guys at Marvel took the extra twenty seconds to slap some boring white text onto a second layer in order to make this image mean something.

Dark Avengers #189

Comic Book Preview: 4/17/13 - Daddy Doomsday Meets Miami Beach

Joe Quinones

Dave: Classic homage to WW2 photograph. I guess? It’s so poorly done it took a second to see what they were doing there. That and Hawkeye looks positively retarded with that smirk. There’s also an enormous amount of wasted space on this cover.

Brendan: Yay referential art. Boo to everything else. The odd colorization, poorly drawn characters, and general lack of cohesion really makes you not even want to bother with this cover. Onto the next one.

Evil Ernie #5

Comic Book Preview: 4/17/13 - Daddy Doomsday Meets Miami Beach

Daniel Brereton

Brendan: Waitaminute, did we take a timeship back to the extreme nineties? Did Brereton have Todd McFarlane hovering over his shoulder whilst drawing this masterpiece?

“Good… GOOD. Now give him a slimey, pointed tongue…”

Dave: Yah nostalgia! I’d much rather this be a one of those Ninja Turtle pastries with the green ooze filling.

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Villain Microseries #1: Krang

Comic Book Preview: 4/17/13 - Daddy Doomsday Meets Miami Beach

Tyler Walpole

Brendan: So if you have the ability to draw Krang from Dimension X in any sort of menacing way, you have my vote. Everything on this cover really works to make you forget the childhood joke villain we all grew up with as this micro-series ushers in a newer, badder Krang.

Dave: It’s definitely a menacing cover and it reminds me of the way Darth Vader is portrayed so often. I’m a little confused as to why there are two Krangs and one of them is giant, but meh. I’ll go with it.

Venom #34

Comic Book Preview: 4/17/13 - Daddy Doomsday Meets Miami Beach

Shane Davis

Brendan: I love the veiny details of that Carnage. I’m also a big fan of the scaling done here, with our monstrous, Jaws-like Carnage contrasting with our “never-say-die,” gunz’a’blazin’ Venom.

Dave: I particularly like the teeth and sharp fingertips. They add the dangerous edge this cover thrusting Venom into. Davis’ rendition of Venom is also nicely done with good detail even though he’s so small.

Dave’s Honorable Mentions

Superior Spider-Man #8

Comic Book Preview: 4/17/13 - Daddy Doomsday Meets Miami Beach

Humberto Ramos

Dave: How often do we see Spidey’s costume being stretched like that? It’s usually super tight, so to see it like this is rather unnerving. I also love how outlandishly big Ramos has made Cardiac’s body. Sure, his head looks a little small, but it captures the power of the villain over Spidey’s demise.

Brendan: Ramos has a tendency to make bodies big and heads tiny. For the most part I think it works with his style but it never goes unnoticed. I’m not sure if I’m on board with the stretchy Spidey suit. It’s an interesting concept, though.

Batwoman #19

Comic Book Preview: 4/17/13 - Daddy Doomsday Meets Miami Beach

Trevor McCarthy

Dave: Doomsday is upon us! The oceans bleed, the sky is blown out and the city has crumbled. And the costumes melt off…I guess. The melting costume has an odd duality to it. It’s partly sexy, but also partly unnerving. In its entirety this cover captures a hopeless vibe.

Brendan: I adore this cover. The melting of the costume is gorgeous and the contrast of blacks and warm colors is quite jarring. That look on Batwoman’s face is priceless.

Dave’s Cover of the Week

Daredevil #25

Comic Book Preview: 4/17/13 - Daddy Doomsday Meets Miami Beach

Adam Kubert

Dave: It’s not often the fairy tale that is superhero comics is on display, but I think it is here. It might sound hokey, but the majestic nature of the hero is important to American comics. This cover captures that as it showcases a human doing the impossible, soaring through the sky, much like the doves in the background and he’s doing it due to his superhuman ability. The reflection in the skyscraper only helps to convey the awesome nature of this scene.

Brendan: This piece by Kubert reminds me of the mighty hero portraits that helped make Alex Ross famous. I think everything about this cover is expertly crafted, from the scale to the colors to the pose to the minor details. My only issue would be, with this being a wraparound, doesn’t that mean the consumer’s first impression is going to be DD’s lower half? It’s a minor gripe but I thought it should be mentioned.

Brendan’s Cover of the Week

Wolverine Max #6

Comic Book Preview: 4/17/13 - Daddy Doomsday Meets Miami Beach

Jock

Brendan: The coloring is what sold me on this cover. The combination of rainbow-phoria and stark-black shadow really helps give you the sense of a man out of his comfort zone. The photo editing reminds me of the gritty art style used in the first and second Max Payne games. I love the contrast of overly colorful and gruesomely grimey.

Dave: Did Wolverine enter the 80s or something…or maybe he’s on Miami Beach? Either way, sick colors man, and the white palm trees add a screen feel that’s much appreciated. It does strike me as odd that the only thing hand drawn is Wolverine, with the rest painted photography, but it’s a striking cover for…wait for it…a striking character!
