Is It Good? Akaneiro #1 Review

We’re going to take a look at the first issue of Akaneiro, a feudalist fantasy comic that could prove to be high on my pull list. Let’s get right into it!

Akaneiro #1 (Dark Horse Comics)

Is It Good? Akaneiro #1 Review

Our story revolves around the young Kani, the daughter of a widower and an outsider to her village. Her village rests on Yomi Island, a veritable tropical paradise. Y’know, if you can get over the demon beasts. Luckily they have some special demon hunters known as The Order of Akane. We watch as all of these elements clash together and create an aftermath that thrusts us into our true adventure.

The writing is superb. Justin Aclin rewards us with a simple yet rich setup that allows us to delve right into the action. The pace is near perfect. There is no feeling of drag or wasted space. Each panel has a purpose and every text bubble is clear and concise.

The storytelling is crystal clear and straightforward.

The art is also fantastic. Original characters pop from the page with rich, beautiful colors throughout. The action scenes are strong and swift and the individuals are all well defined and very well drawn. I adore the Feudalist style mixed with elements of manga.

  • If you’re not a fan of fantasy or manga, this might rub you the wrong way

Is It Good?

If you haven’t figured it out by now, I think this comic is really good. Unlike so many other number 1s that fall short, this one gives you plenty of bang for your buck and leaves you wanting more.
