Comic Book Preview: 7/10/13 – Harsh Color, Dark Shadows

Ah, yes. Another holiday weekend, another inappropriately harsh hangover. Perhaps you should take a few moments out of your Monday to recoup with our ever-so-lovely Comic Cover Preview. We’ll try to stay away from the harsh brights this week.

WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Miss Fury #4

Comic Book Preview: 7/10/13 - Harsh Color, Dark Shadows

Joe Benitez

Dave: Miss Fury says the best way to clean up a mess is with your breasts. Look at that sweeping action! Get this lady the Shamwow guy. She’s going to make a fortune from teenage boys.

Brendan: Teenage boys and lonely men! I feel like this is the cliche “sultry” pose and, while the basic concept does… ahem… work, I don’t think Mr. Benitez has brought anything special to the plate. That’s some good looking hard wood, though.

Fathom Elite Saga #4

Comic Book Preview: 7/10/13 - Harsh Color, Dark Shadows

Talent Caldwell

Brendan: Hey, uhh, buddy? There seems to be something wrong with your neck. Are those all veins? Tendons? Is that, like, a thing that actually happens to people? I think he needs to see a doctor.

Dave: That sure looks painful. Too many neck pulls and cleans…I’ve seen it a thousand times!

Dave’s Honorable Mentions

Astro City #2

Comic Book Preview: 7/10/13 - Harsh Color, Dark Shadows

Alex Ross

Dave: The phone, notepad and pen are genius moves on Ross’ part. It adds a layer of reality to the already realistic painting. Also, is that Barbie at the top of the cover? Her soulless eyes are striking. That’s what happens when Ken drops you for the Katniss doll. The bitch.

Brendan: DAMMIT DAVE I SAID NO HARSH COLORS. I get that Alex Ross has to be sick of drawing the same gorgeous images over and over again and I understand his desire to “branch out” through experimentation with color palettes. That said, this experiment might be a dud. I don’t think the color choices bring anything to the image. If anything, they distract and offend.

Uncanny X-Men #8

Comic Book Preview: 7/10/13 - Harsh Color, Dark Shadows

J. Scott Campbell

Dave: The cheesecake train has arrived! Sure, this is an excuse to get Campbell to draw our ladies just standing around, but the costumes and hair are pretty inspired. Check Rogue’s hair for instance, as she’s trying to kick it up like Storm’s mohawk. At the very least it’s a fun cover. You remember fun, don’t you?

Brendan: I love that they’ve all switched costumes. It’s like the goings-on of one of those infamous Xavier School slumber parties I just made up right then! Overall there isn’t much to hate on this cover. It’s cute, fun and leaves you with a smile on your face.

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions

Black Bat #3

Comic Book Preview: 7/10/13 - Harsh Color, Dark Shadows

Jae Lee

Brendan: Something about the symmetry of this cover gets me. I enjoy the concept of light/dark weaponry as well as the stoic, emotionless face. While it may be a bit bland, I think it has hidden gems that help summarize the character portrayed.

Dave: The shadows are intriguing on this cover. They should be impossible to look this way, but maybe it’s his powers. The character is mysterious and just the right level of brooding.

Batgirl #22

Comic Book Preview: 7/10/13 - Harsh Color, Dark Shadows

Alex Garner

Brendan: I must say, Garner is a Gee Dee talent! I love the thick brushstrokes that give the cover a blurry, aurora borealis feel. Also, I think the concept of sharpening and keeping Batgirl’s teary face in focus was a great one.

Dave: There’s a bit of movement going on too which is pretty neat. Check the motion blur on the left arm. I don’t know why she’s holding the knife the way she is, but dang are those tears heartfelt.

Brendan’s Cover of the Week

Batman Arkham Unhinged #16

Comic Book Preview: 7/10/13 - Harsh Color, Dark Shadows

Christopher Mitten

Brendan: I love the use of space here. Everything works together so well and you’re drawn from each component to the next. Beyond that, I love the detailing of the architecture as well as the sputtering flecks of material in front of the flood lights. Everything combined results in an incredible, moody piece.

Dave: The angle at which Bats is tilting on the chimney makes everything feel a bit vexing and mysterious. The sheer weight of Batman and the building pull the viewers eyes in while the see through nature of the villain lighten the rest of the cover nicely.

Dave’s Cover of the Week

Fearless Defenders #6

Comic Book Preview: 7/10/13 - Harsh Color, Dark Shadows

Mark Brooks

Dave: Mark Brooks is another artist that isn’t satisfied unless he’s got a killer concept behind all the pretty artwork. Here we got ourselves a pulp paperback that’s on the resale shelf with a hastily added sticker. Love the worn binding and monsters, but what I truly love is the orange connecting our heroes to the monsters.

Brendan: I do dig the worn cover concept. The colors blend a bit too much for my tastes, but the art is impeccable. The detailing of those ghouls is simply inspiring.
