Comic Book Preview: 7/17/13 – Peacock Blur

Summer is just flying by and what are you doing with your time? You’re wasting it reading the witty quips of two no-class numbskulls by the names of Dave and Brendan.

So, y’know. Thanks for that.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Dave – There’s blood everywhere! Oh God. OH GOD!

WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Thor: God of Thunder (2012) #10

Comic Book Preview: 7/17/13 - Peacock Blur

Esad Ribic

Dave: This may be the rapiest cover of the week. Does old Thor have to mount our bad guy or is that just an accident? Either way, this cover is incredibly busy which makes it a bit of a confusing mess.

Brendan: There’s ol’ Dave again. Seeing rape and tentacles in every cover he looks at. I think this cover is pretty epic. It does take a few moments to get adjusted to the content but once you’ve acclimated I think it reads rather well.

Batman 66 #1

Comic Book Preview: 7/17/13 - Peacock Blur

Mike Allred

Brendan: While there isn’t really anything wrong with this cover as art, I must ask: Did someone actually want this? Is this a comic concept that had enough strength behind it to actually make it to print? I honestly can’t see anyone seeing this as a “must buy” first issue.

Dave: Throwbacks are about as good as horseshoes and handgrenades. Do I need it? Meh, maybe, but only occasionally.

Green Lantern: New Guardians #22

Comic Book Preview: 7/17/13 - Peacock Blur

Rafael Albuquerque

Brendan: Well that looks… uncomfortable. I wonder what they’re making Kyle stare at so intently. Hopefully not a Honey Boo Boo marathon! That would be the worst, amirite guys?

Dave: Are those…tentacles grabbing his ears? Wait, I think this is that new Apple gizmo that’ll trump the iPad. It’s called the iForce. Make all your friends watch your terrible YouTube clips today!

Dave’s Honorable Mentions

Supergirl #22

Comic Book Preview: 7/17/13 - Peacock Blur

Mahmud Asrar

Dave: If DC Comics slaps a title, barcode or other nonsense on this cover I will personally slap my dog Winston in the head. There, I said it. Whenever an artist employs the striking use of color as is here I can’t help but be in awe of the delicate balance being struck. The shadows on the right side of Supergirl also does a good job creating a sense of evil or confusion that strikes us as possibly just as evil as the left side.

Brendan: Yeah! I’m gonna punch a dog too! I think the black shadows that run throughout this cover perfectly synergizes the subjects. I think the simple use of only a few important covers also gives the piece a stark, emotionless feel that works incredibly well.

Batman and Catwoman #22

Comic Book Preview: 7/17/13 - Peacock Blur

Patrick Gleason & Mick Gray

Dave: Checkout the awesome detail in the Bat signal, the bats fluttering along the cave and the super slick flashy leather on Catwoman. All incredible details made to pop due to the intense use of solid green.

Brendan: I wondered upon my first viewing if they were, in fact, in the cave or if the green background is a smoking illusion. Like Dave mentioned, detail is the name of the game on this cover with rich highlights throughout the signal and background.

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions

Half Past Danger #3

Comic Book Preview: 7/17/13 - Peacock Blur

Stephen Mooney

Brendan: It was a tough choice between the two Half-Past Danger covers, but ultimately this offering just provides more bang for your buck. I love the 1940s adventure feel that runs through these covers.

Dave: The screen palm tree and sun help the character stand out in all his raptor killing glory.

Red Sonja #1

Comic Book Preview: 7/17/13 - Peacock Blur

Colleen Doran

Brendan: Do you know what we’re looking at, here? We’re looking at a Red Sonja cover that avoids pointless gore and gratuitous fanservice. However, that isn’t even the reason you should be in love with this cover! The warm covers and the selected pose give off this timeless magnificence that I feel is rarely presented from Red. Also, the detailings of her room are vast and rich.

Dave: Peacock power! Love this cover for the details like the cool helmet on the ground, shield and of course the peacocks. My only complaint would be that sun. Is it a sun or a moon? It’s kind of throwing me off.

Brendan’s Cover of the Week

All New X-Men #14

Comic Book Preview: 7/17/13 - Peacock Blur

Stuart Immonen

Brendan: I am lost in that background. For every fifty bland, boring monochrome splash background you get one of the gorgeously rendered, detailed submissions. The layering is astounding and the character work in the foreground is nothing to scoff at either. Everything on this cover works, from colors to characters to detail.

Dave: That background screams class and I think that was Immonen’s intention. The texture and detail are astounding. By throwing a circle around our characters we’ve brought a focus and a feeling. Well done.

Dave’s Cover of the Week

Conan the Barbarian #18

Comic Book Preview: 7/17/13 - Peacock Blur

Massimo Carnevale

Dave: Massimo is always good for a dramatic cover. There are a few things that make this cover stand out from all the other “Conan wielding a sword” covers we’ve seen. First is the intense blur effect surrounding our heroes. This must have been done digitally and come to think of it I’ve noticed blur in comics really only appeared in the last few years. Second is the twinkling blade and third is the flame background. Together this cover feels like that moment right before the fight scene where the camera crash zooms in and time stops.

Brendan: The blur effect is key, I feel. It gives an otherwise actionless scene some nice drama. Beyond that, there is plenty of rich detail between the figures, their clothing and the flaming background to keep you interested.
