Is It Good? All-New X-Men #14 Review

Over the years the X-Men have become less of a team and more of a select few powerhouses. They no longer work like a team as the original First Class did, but each hero doing their solo thing in battle and always winning. So it’s a breath of fresh air to see the team working together again in the new time travel series, All-New X-Men. So far this series has been an even-keeled read with very few duds, but as far as #14, is it good?

If you missed our review of All-New X-Men #12 read it here.

If you’re just joining us, last issue Wolverine and crew met up with the Avengers who told them to stand down and stay out of trouble. Once they peaced out Wolverine told his crew they were going after Mystique, Lady Mastermind and Sabertooth. It turns out they were piling up cash to buy an island from Hydra. This issue consists of their battle.

Young Jean as Phoenix is pretty badass.

Usually an entire issue focused on a single battle isn’t worth more than a flip through. Luckily, writer Brian Michael Bendis knows how to weave in character tinges and intersperse clever moments to keep things fresh and interesting. With Lady Mastermind and Jean Grey at his disposal, there plenty of ways he misdirects the reader and the characters which makes things fun.

One liner for the win.

This issue also showcases the original X-Men gaining a bit of confidence and showing off their skills as a team. They work together and do a great job taking out the bad guys. They aren’t as green as you might expect and it’s fun to see them kick ass. They also exude some nice attitude which makes them less cardboard cutouts and more interesting.

Only a day in the future and you’re calling Sabertooth furball. Don’t let it go to your head!

Artist Stuart Immonen continues to dazzle with every single panel. The man is a certifiable master at this point, at least in my mind. He knocks every expression out of the park, his layouts are always fresh and tantalizing and even the smallest panel has enough detail to warrant a full page spread. Even the smallest of panels warrants extra attention and extra time is always needed to see what’s going on within them.

  • Best looking interiors in comics today
  • Always fun and interesting side bits
  • It contains a single fight sequence

Once again this comic gets a good but not smashingly good review. Why is that? Because at the end of the day you’re paying for character tinges and funny moments on the side. The decompression on this series is so insane it always feels as if you’re getting slighted in some way. And yet, the comic is a lot of fun to read and always has something to say about the characters.

Is It Good?

Yes. A very consistent read that only gets knocked down a notch for its decompression.
