Just a heads up: comic books are real, unicorns are fake and y’all need to recognize that Wednesday is the end-all, be-all of comic book addiction. Don’t believe us? Just check the covers of the week below and try not to lose your ish:

WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Superior Spider-Man #19

Comic Book Preview: 10/16/13 – Holed Static
Ryan Stegman

Dave: This is a sweet cover for a variety of reasons, but damn does it give me the heebie jeebies. It’s not even just the holes, but the curved nature to them, like he’s being sliced up.

Brendan: That holed up 2099 is creepy as balls. I’m not crazy about SpOck’s squished up head but other than that I think this whole cover is fantastic.

Danger Girl: The Chase #2

Comic Book Preview: 10/16/13 – Holed Static
Photo

Dave: This just doesn’t do it for me; I mean, did they even try with this one? She’s not even looking all that threatening with the knife. Maybe they’re trying to convince people that there are naked lady photographs within?

Brendan: This looks like JPEG #2 of a 14 JPEG pornography set for a Danger Girl rip-off spread. The fact that this may actually be on the cover of the comic is just sad.

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #112

Comic Book Preview: 10/16/13 – Holed Static
Rafael Albuquerque

Brendan: I’m torn when it comes to this cover. On the one hand, I think it’s fantastic. I love the colors, the sharp line drawings, and the general setup of the cover. On the other hand, I think the characters are a bit messy (those eyes… I can’t get over those eyes.)

You know what? Never mind. This cover rules. It’s weird that the eyes are jacked up. That’s why it’s in WTF.

Dave: The layering is what gets me on this one, from the background being yellow (usually used to enhance anxiety) to the purple monster and then, in our foreground, the running heroine. There are details in that kitty cat that make me smile too; like the tiny ear, the scary mace-like right paw and the ripped back. Mice beware!

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions

Justice League Of America #8

Comic Book Preview: 10/16/13 – Holed Static
Doug Mahnke

Brendan: Props for the ominous minimalist cover! I know we’re kind of here to awkwardly gripe over drawings but it’s incredibly refreshing to see a cover like this.

Dave: Odd how the static looks like waves or wavelengths. That makes it pop more than the (expected) white noise.

Dave’s Honorable Mentions

Guardians of the Galaxy #7

Comic Book Preview: 10/16/13 – Holed Static
Paolo Rivera

Dave: Holy pulp comics, Brendan! Do you see that rocket on the left of the page? Me likey that little touch, which makes use of space, but also allows the smaller image within the cover making it more like a paperback novel. The mix of typography hammers this sucker home into a nice comfy place inside my brain.

Brendan: I love the pulp motif that is masterfully executed here. I also enjoy how vast and detailed the cover is.

Batman Beyond Universe #3

Comic Book Preview: 10/16/13 – Holed Static
Rafael Albuquerque

Brendan: This cover has an absolutely fantastic layout. I love the bolt of yellow that fills out the top left of the cover. Also the brush stroke effect is top notch.

Dave: The bolt and smoke on the ground make this work, although the painterly Batman helps too, particularly the weight Albuquerque has given to the cape. The symbol in the background seems to suggest this is the bad guys book, he’s taken ever, which I also like.

Dave’s Cover of the Week

Batman: Arkham Unhinged #19

Comic Book Preview: 10/16/13 – Holed Static
Christopher Mitten

Dave: Lets talk about blimps. Didn’t notice them, did you? Go on, look for them. There are three. Pretty snazzy, eh? Oh also, the silhouette of Batman, the graphic design element of the spattered paint and the excellent use of color. It’s like she’s diving into water, but that water is the sky. Gorgeous. The whip is used masterfully to swing your eyes around the page too. Bravo.

Brendan: I enjoy the whip line as well as the Batman silhouette. On top of that, the blending cityscape is vast and gorgeous. I think the Catwoman character is kinda wonky but that’s okay.
