Is It Good? Star Wars: Legacy #9 Review

Star Wars Legacy is an interesting series, primarily because there are no rules. So many Star Wars books are set in between the films which force them to only go so far without ruining continuity.

Not the case here, which means you can get all sorts of Sith/Jedi action adventure like no where else. So far I’ve loved most of this series and with the heroes awaiting their doom at the end of last issue we’re probably in for a good issue this week. Or are we? Is it good?

Star Wars: Legacy #9 (Dark Horse Comics)

Check out our review of issue #8 here.

We left off with Ania Solo and her Imperial Knight buddy Jao discovering a Sith pirate enslaving Mon Calamari for his own benefit. Sadly they got their asses beat and sent into a shuttle that’s hurtling towards a poisoned planet’s ocean. A drop of this liquid kills you. Not sure, but I don’t think there’s any Jedi power against something like that.

The depths of the ocean are a scary thing.

Writers Corinna Bechko and Gabriel Hardman continue to write very good action sequences that start and end in a single issue while progressing the story just enough to keep your interest on multiple levels. This issue deals mostly with the rescue of our heroes from the poisoned ocean, but there’s some major developments elsewhere that set up an epic battle for next issue.

The events in Star Wars: Legacy #9 also bolsters the camaraderie of the heroes, something that has been lacking for a few issues now. With the team back together, Hardman and Bechko have brought things full circle. They even let Sauk be a major factor, which enhances his development.

I’m continuing to enjoy the rash development of Jao. He’s a Jedi, but he’s acting without control and foresight more and more. The man is growing ever more impatient to stop Wredd, which as we all know is not the Jedi way. He continues to be the driving force, at least for me, to keep reading and see how he develops.

If only…

Artist Brian Thies has a lot of dark shadows to work with this issue and even uses full dark in some panels nicely. There’s a gloom and doom that hangs over this issue, because what is a story without risks and the stakes raised. Color and light are used too, particularly when we get a shot of a Jedi army.

Love the “ludicrous speed” straight lines.

  • Theis dark work is suited to this story
  • Great pacing
  • Bring on this epic climax!

Is It Good?

Yes indeedy. There’s not a lot bad with this issue with a progression of story and a building towards climax that’s delectable. So often comics build to a climax by cheapening the moments prior, leaving loose ends annoyingly open, but here the story is moving nicely and the calm before the story is incredibly enjoyable.
