Is It Good? Hinterkind #5 Review

The last issue of Hinterkind was so-so in comparison to the previous ones, which were progressively getting better and better. Can this issue get us back track? Is it good?

Hinterkind #5 (Vertigo Comics)

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

The underground base is starting to burst into flames and blow up. Prosper and the survivors with her are searching for a way out of this insanity, but the exits continue to close up all over. What will kill them first? The heat, the explosions, the lack of air, the patchwork soldiers, or the menacing monsters that caused this all in the first place?

Someone’s about to become extra crispy.

This was an action-packed issue to be sure, making up for the very slow pace of the last issue. It’s all about the characters trying to escape or figuring out how to stop the flames — which turned out to be intense and thrilling. The whole issue seems to be setting up for a big confrontation and conclusion to the arc next issue by methodically moving characters into place and also continuing a plotline last seen in the second issue that involved that queen and princess. There’s a lot of promise for the next issue because of all these elements set into place and very little payoff for any of the characters.

Otherwise, the rest of the issue is good overall. There is no real mythos buildup this time as with previous issues, this one instead focusing on some more characterization for the lead character, Prosper. It’s basically about her learning to accept that she cannot save everyone, even if she wants to. Kind of weird, since this element wasn’t really seen with her character. The dialogue was good and helps convey some of the panic and frustrations of the characters. The pacing is also well done, with every character given some page time and the storylines progressing.

Well, at least our trucks are built Ford tough.

There is not much to comment on regarding the artwork that I haven’t already said. That is, it’s fine and gets the job done overall. The coloring felt a bit more noteworthy, conveying the color, intensity, and torridity of the fires breaking out in the base. Otherwise, the usual boring layouts and odd shading scribbling (look at the picture above to see what I mean about the shading) are the only things really wrong or worth nitpicking about with the comic.

Is It Good?
