Is It Good? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #33 Review

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

The Ninja Turtles have gotten back to the business of sweeping the Big Apple, taking on petty crime while simultaneously using their outings as training and stealth sessions. Unfortunately, Shredder continues to maintain a stranglehold on the city. A big reason for that is the work of Hun, Casey’s estranged and genetically enhanced father.

Mr. Jones has managed to turn the Purple Dragons into a formidable fighting force, which has also endeared him to Shredder as a trusted commander. Unfortunately, his shiny new boss/mentor has a new ultimatum: Get your kid in line, or his ass is grass.

Meanwhile, Casey’s head is all sorts of messed up over his alcoholic father “recovering” into a supervillain. It’s so bad that he’s even starting to ignore his girlfriend and her hot new haircut.

“Short hair DO care, Casey…short hair do care…”

After a violent confrontation at the old tavern, however, father and son hold a powwow to discuss their messed up relationship. Out of this meeting comes a definitive answer about where everyone’s true loyalties lie…and if a family is willing to kill each other to keep what they have.

Is It Good?

Yes.

To expand on that a little, hell yes.

Tom Waltz gives us a story with wonderfully brutal fight scenes and an even more powerful emotional impact. The discussion between Casey and his father is heartbreaking, infuriating, and completely in line with what the characters have gone through during the course of the series.

The artwork by Manteus Santolouco is top notch as usual. He handles crazy action and the gut wrenching internal struggle of the Hun with the same excellent attention to detail.

As someone who was in a really bad car accident last year, I can confirm that the image above is exactly what it feels like.

I really wish I could say more about this issue, but you just need to go out and get it. If you don’t like cool action sequences and superb drama, then at least give it a shot for another take on April’s rockin’ new hairdo.
