A while back, Chew had a special issue dedicated to the utterly incredible and bad ass rooster named Poyo, where he fought a super villain who was making it rain farm animals. Yes, it was crazy but from my understanding, a huge hit and very popular. Here we are now with another special issue dedicated to Poyo and his crazy adventures. Is it good?

Just to reiterate, Poyo is one bad ass bird. After saving the president and kicking the mechanical nano-plague inside of him, Poyo is off on his next job in another dimension of Yoek, where the citizens and leaders of the land are running into some trouble. A very powerful Groceryomancer has turned all of the vegetables into these giant sentient, killer veggies that are wiping everyone out. Another sorcerer calls in some of the most powerful warriors from different dimensions to solve the problem, but will they be enough?
With this rooster in their corner, they may stand a chance.
Cutting straight to the chase, there isn’t a whole lot to talk about with this comic. It’s like the previous Poyo one-shot where it’s just the character going out and being an utter bad-ass. It doesn’t affect the main story in any way, nor does any of the main or supporting cast appear in the story besides him (well, and one other who doesn’t do much). This is pure, simple entertainment and fan service for the fans of the series without any of that pesky story progression or character development.
However, it does all of that extremely well. For fans of the character, this is a blast. Instead of the James Bond feel like the last one-shot, this one goes straight for all fantasy everything. You get a lot of great moments, jokes, and background gags with this fantasy theme tale, like the entire war going on in Yoek with vegetables. It’s great stuff, though I can see that if you aren’t particularly a fan of Poyo himself this may not be for you.
This sums up the whole experience, honestly.
As for the rest of the comic, from the writing and artwork, the quality here is the same as always. The humor, again, is top notch. The dialogue and narration is a lot of fun, with plenty of great lines to be found. The story is pretty simplistic, but it doesn’t need to be anything more than that. The artwork is great—bringing the story’s funny tone to life, has very distinctive looking characters, and has tons of memorable imagery in it. Basically, it’s the quality of Chew you are used to, just focusing on Poyo.
Is It Good?
Chew: Warrior Chicken Poyo #1 is what you would expect: an entire issue devoted to Poyo kicking butt, but in a fantasy setting with the usual level of quality that the series is known for. If you really dig Poyo and want to see more adventures with him, then grab this issue. If not, just wait it out for the next regular issue of Chew; this issue won’t change your mind about the character.
